An excellent book is "Challenging Chicago" by Perry Duis. He also wrote an excellent book called "The Saloon," about the role of the saloon in the social fabric of the 19th century in Chicago and Boston. I found both of these in the Boston Public Library. Whoever mentioned the book pointed out that even if you had no Chicago history that the book would be of interest to those doing genealogy as it dealt with so much that was going on at that time. Does anybody know what that book may have been? I am not even sure it was mentioned on either of these lists.
