I wonder if this only applies to Milwaukee or it was trendy to marry in Wisconsin? My gr-grandparents were married in Waukegan (Lake County) in 1891 and I always assumed that there was something more logical to it--to save a few $ makes sense to me. By the way, the clerk misspelled by gr-grandmother's name too! Katie

    3. I'd be interested in this, as my grandparents also got married in Milwaukee. They eloped - took an excursion boat up there from Chicago. This was in 1895. And yes, my grandfather's last name was also mis-spelled in the register book!
