Elizabeth, You didn't request an obit for Edwin, but I stumbled across it while searching for the others. It's an interesting obit -- thought I should send it your way. -Mary 1913-12-22 Chicago Tribune DR. GEO. W. GRAY, BOYS' FRIEND, DEAD Originator of Forward Movement Succumbs in Evanston at Age of 79. FOUND TWO RAGGED LADS Housed Them and Interested Charity Which Expanded Into Big Institution. George W. Gray. Born Dec. 6, 1834. Died Dec. 21, 1913. The Rev. George W. Gray, for many years a prominent figure in Methodist church work and founder of the Forward Movement - a settlement of educate boys and girls of the Eighteenth ward - died yesterday in his home at 1629 Hinman street in Evanston, at the age of 79. Dr. and Mrs. Gray celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on March 4, 1912. The widow and two childen - Dr. Edwin W. Gray of Chicago and Mrs. C. N. Segar of Evanston - survive. Born in Ohio. Dr. Gray was born near Pique, OH, on Dec. 6, 1834, and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan university in 1858 with the degrees of A. B. and A. M. He entered the Methodist ministry and became a member of the Rock River conference. At the time he started the Forward Movement in 1893 he was secretary of the Freedman's Aid society. He was also general secretary of the American university. For many years he has been associate pastor with Dr. Frank W. Gunsaulus of the Central church. The inception of the Forward movement was the finding by Dr. Gray of two ragged boys in Blue Island in 1893. Their plight so appealed to him that he installed them in a basement room under a saloon at Halsted and Harrison streets. He soon secured funds for his charity and with a name, supported by funds, he began his work among the children of the congested old Eighteenth ward. It was social settlement work with additional angles to appeal to children. The Forward movement expanded rapidly, and now occupies a comparatively spacious home at 1356 West Monroe street. About 600 women and children are members of the different clubs. One of the important features of the work is Forward Movement park, near Saugatuck, Mich., where about 1,000 children annually are made happy by fortnight outings in July and August. At the summer camp a miniature boys' republic has been in existence for many years, with Dr. Gray at the head. Elections, laws, and a congress have taught many a young west sider the rudiments of popular government and the value of self-help, which was Dr. Gray's maxim.
