My email has had a few glitches over the weekend, so this may be old news, but just in case it isn't, Chicago birth certificates and registers are now available online for free at FamilySearch Labs. Hooray! Cynthia http://tinyurl.com/49ooet

Short answer: Yes! Have you used familysearch.org? This new site is a pilot site for which thousands of volunteers are transcribing records. It's especially good when you find your mother's birth certificate or your grandparents' marriage license and can download them! http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0 Click on North America and see all the records. Here's how one volunteer described process of transcription. http://boards.ancestry.com/localities.northam.usa.states.illinois.counties.cook/27178/mb.ashx "I indexed over 3,000 records myself. But it takes a second indexer to do the same exact pages that I did. Then a third person, an administrator, compares the two persons' work, and where there were different interpretations of the handwriting, that third person makes the decision on which person's interpretation seems to be correct."
