    3. Dear readers, Since several years I have a problem with finding information about Willibaldus Vereecken the brother of the grandfather of my grandmother and his sun Desiderius. They left Belgium in 1855 and up till now I can't find any information about them. Willibaldus Vereecken was born on the 7th of June 1816 in Stoppeldijk, Netherlands married on the 22nd of November 1837 in Elversele, Belgium Isabella Jacoba de Puijsseleir, born the 3th of February 1811 in Elversele, Belgium and died the 9th of October 1854 in Gend, Belgium. They became 4 children: 1. Desiderius Vereecken, born the 23rd of March 1839 in Elversele 2. Fiodela Guislene Vereecken, born the 20th of July 1840 in Elversele and untraceable since then 3. Joanna Melania Vereecken, born the 20th of October 1841 in Elversele and died on the 19th of November 1841 in Elversele 4. Angelica Maria Clementina Vereecken, born the 6th of November 1842 in Elversele and died the 1st December 1921 in Oostburg, Netherlands. The information I am looking for is about Willebaldus and Desiderius. The information I have about Willibaldus here in Belgium and the Netherlands are 2 remarks in the marriage registration of Angelica who married twice in the Netherlands and in this registration is stated about her father: "father died in Ottawa North America" and "father died in the united states of america". As the first marriage took place on the 14th of July 1869 he must have died before that date. From the Passengers list I know that Willibold Vereeken, 39 year and Desire Vereeken, 17 year arrived in New York on the 14th of December 1855 by the m.v. Henry Reed. Conclusion Willibaldus died in Ottawa in the United States between 14-12-1855 and 14-7-1869. The information I have about Desiderius is that I found his name in the Records Collection United States Registers of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798-1914, page 230, line number 19, Affiliate Publication Number M233, Affiliate Film Numer 28, GS Film number 350334, Digital Folder Number 004719498, Image Number 00541 with the following information: Name: Vereecken, Desire Relisted: Chicago III Born: Ulversall ( translation of the Belgian name Elversele??) Age: 21 Profession: cooper (info: his father was a brewer) Remarks: Deserted Aug 10/61 from Newport Barracks KY I found may be an interesting supplement in the United States Census 1860 Illinois - Cook - 5th Ward (chicago City) being the name Dazri Varicen, age 20, born in 1840 in Belgium. Is it possible that Desire changed after his desertation of the army his name into Dazri Varicen. So I am intersted in any suplmentarry information about Willibaldus and Desiderius concerning possible marriages and their passing away. Thanking in advance for any help I remain yours faithfully, Jan E.M. 3. Hello Jan. I've tried searching for the two men, Willibaldus and Desiderius, but I've come up with nothing as yet. The father, Willibald, is nowhere to be found in the 1860 US census. It's possible that he had died before that census took place. It's also possible that he's listed on a page that isn't legible, or the name is very badly misspelled. There are several places in the U.S. with the name 'Ottawa'. Some are cities and some are counties, but he just doesn't appear anywhere. I also checked the Canadian records because Ottawa is the capital city of Canada, but nothing shows up there either. The 1860 census record that you found for a Dazri Varicen is most likely Desire, the son. He was living in Chicago, and that's where he later signed up for the Army. I don't think he had changed his name because the census was taken in 1860 and he signed up in 1861. There is one more thing I would like to check out. If I find something I'll let you know. I wish I could have been of more help to you.
