    1. Re: [IL-CHICAGO] WWII robert hillman
    2. Val, It was because of you -- pushing me to make phone calls that I found out the delay in the body being returned to the States, and where he was killed. I have an old, color photo of Robert's stone at the cemetery [very faded]. I examined it with a magnifying glass and came up with 1945 for date of death. I phoned the cemetery for some info on his father & mother, and asked for Robert's dates, too. The gal kept saying "DATE OF BURIAL" is August 18, 1948. Robert is buried between his parents in Irving Park Cemetery [Hazelcrest - Block #10, Lot 31]. I then tracked down the Tribune info -- on March 15, 1945 he was listed as wounded. But it was the obit, August 17, 1948 showing Robert as KIA on March 5, 1945 that tied it all up. And I probably never would have looked for the obit in 1948 if I had not known that was the date of burial. Of course, the obit state his Grandparents, Morgan & Jean Askew. WHO ?? I am still looking for them.... I suspect that Jean Askew is Jenny Lyons Lockard [Robert's maternal Grandmother], who died in ...... Christian County, IL., but have no clue for Morgan.. So Thanks, Val, for pushing me ........ I have also spoken with two of my mother's cousins and one, I found out that the reason that I could not find his mother is 1. she remarried and has a different name and 2. She is still living at 100 years of age!! 3. Sharon - You say in the first paragraph that you "...found out the delay...". Can you relay it to us? Thanks, Dave Witthans P.S. Valentine sure makes for a lot of work sometimes, eh? ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, January 15, 2006 11:30 AM Subject: Re: [IL-CHICAGO] WWII robert hillman Val, It was because of you -- pushing me to make phone calls that I found out the delay in the body being returned to the States, and where he was killed.
