    3. FYI..............   The earlier marriage applications, pre early 1900's, aren't worth purchasing.  There's no  information  in addition to the license other than a signature.   Judie Mason Chicago --- On Fri, 2/20/09, Bonnie Brown <brown_bonnie@att.net> wrote: From: Bonnie Brown <brown_bonnie@att.net> Subject: [IL-COOK-CHICAGO] Marriage Certificates/Applications in Cook County To: il-cook-chicago@rootsweb.com, irish-in-chicago@rootsweb.com Date: Friday, February 20, 2009, 7:29 AM To answer the questions I've received: You cannot order the marriage application online through the cookcountygenealogy.com link. You have to do it in person at the County Clerk's office at 69 W. Washington lower level. They do have a new office layout, much more efficient than the old place. I had to pay $15 for the marriage certificate, PLUS another $15 for the license application...hey, we've got politician's relatives to support here! Please excuse my sarcasm ;-} Hope this helps. It's $15, just like the certificate. Well, my order arrived this week. The marriage I ordered was from 1946. There are blanks on the form for names of bride and groom, ages (years), and BIRTHDATES, whether married before (widowed, divorced), whether they're blood relatives, signatures of both bride and groom, and ADDRESS of both bride and groom. Also a signature of the County Clerk and Deputy. Now I can't promise that every bride and groom filled out the forms entirely (mine did!), but the blanks are there. 2. The site is great. Just this morning I found who I think is my GGGrandfather's first wife, on that site [in Germany]. I never thought I would find her name, and it becomes important in trying to find my GGrandfather's half brother [who also came to the USA] - she would be his mother [who lived and died in Germany], but not my GGrandfather's mother [who I know because she came to the USA and is buried just a few miles from my house, next to my GGrandfather]. I just sat staring at the screen -- dumb struck !! I am still not sure I believe it. Sharon On 14 Feb 2009 at 20:30, Mary Snow wrote: Short answer: Yes! Have you used familysearch.org? 3. Elizabeth, You didn't request an obit for Edwin, but I stumbled across it while searching for the others. It's an interesting obit -- thought I should send it your way. -Mary 1913-12-22 Chicago Tribune DR. GEO. W. GRAY, BOYS' FRIEND, DEAD Originator of Forward Movement Succumbs in Evanston at Age of 79. FOUND TWO RAGGED LADS Housed Them and Interested Charity Which Expanded Into Big Institution. George W. Gray. Born Dec. 6, 1834. Died Dec. 21, 1913. The Rev. George W. Gray, for many years a prominent figure in Methodist church work and founder of the Forward Movement - a settlement of educate boys and girls of the Eighteenth ward - died yesterday in his home at 1629 Hinman street in Evanston, at the age of 79. Dr. and Mrs. Gray celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on March 4, 1912. The widow and two childen - Dr. Edwin W. Gray of Chicago and Mrs. C. N. Segar of Evanston - survive. Born in Ohio. Dr. Gray was born near Pique, OH, on Dec. 6, 1834, and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan university in 1858 with the degrees of A. B. and A. M. He entered the Methodist ministry and became a member of the Rock River conference. At the time he started the Forward Movement in 1893 he was secretary of the Freedman's Aid society. He was also general secretary of the American university. For many years he has been associate pastor with Dr. Frank W. Gunsaulus of the Central church. The inception of the Forward movement was the finding by Dr. Gray of two ragged boys in Blue Island in 1893. Their plight so appealed to him that he installed them in a basement room under a saloon at Halsted and Harrison streets. He soon secured funds for his charity and with a name, supported by funds, he began his work among the children of the congested old Eighteenth ward. It was social settlement work with additional angles to appeal to children. The Forward movement expanded rapidly, and now occupies a comparatively spacious home at 1356 West Monroe street. About 600 women and children are members of the different clubs. One of the important features of the work is Forward Movement park, near Saugatuck, Mich., where about 1,000 children annually are made happy by fortnight outings in July and August. At the summer camp a miniature boys' republic has been in existence for many years, with Dr. Gray at the head. Elections, laws, and a congress have taught many a young west sider the rudiments of popular government and the value of self-help, which was Dr. Gray's maxim.
