    1. [IL-COOK-CHICAGO] AWESOME SITE !!! U.S. County Maps
    2. Julie & Kevin
    3. Hello List , We all have brick walls in researching. Most times it is about the county they lived in & the year involved. The counties were created & re-sized often. Many times the same location was in a different or now non existing county. The wonderful site below has most states from their beginning to very recent , showing the creation of it's counties. It is slow in loading , but oh so worth it. Pick your state , it starts from that states beginning , you will see all the years when a change occurred. Under the map you have 5 buttons 1) PLAY ( quickly moving thru the years) 2) STOP 3) VIEW 4) PREV 5 )NEXT . I just use the NEXT button , it allows you to read all that happened in the time frame. The areas not yet designated as a county are shaded in blue. You can see the state taking shape & growing. Also some counties listed are no longer counties today, names we never heard of !! You will be able to follow your counties growth or demise thru the years. PA started in 1673, Allegheny county in PA is very interesting to follow from original size to it's place in history today. Under the years listed are the abbreviations used in the set up. This why finding some missing relatives is so difficult , we need to know WHAT the county was called in a given time!! So in looking at a family in a given time frame look at the map & year to see just what the ground they ALWAYS lived on was called county-wise. Have a good look around for each state... lots of good info. Here is the site ; enjoy Julie B in NC http://www.familyhistory101.com/map_county.html

    1. [IL-COOK-CHICAGO] Chicago couples married in Milwaukee 1894
    2. ROBERT SCHILLER
    3. This is long but hopefully worth it. While searching all over trying to find my g-grandparents' wedding date in Chicago, I came across an interesting article in the Chicago Tribune archives. In a nutshell, it said that many couples from Chicago were travelling north to Milwaukee to get married in order to save the $2 license fee. That money was used instead for a steamboat trip up Lake Michigan to Milwaukee. For an additional $3 to cover the Justice's fee to marry them, streetcar fare and incidentals, the whole marriage could be done for about $5. The article estimates that over 1000 couples did this just between 1 May and 1 September of 1894, although only about 250 of those had been registered with the Deeds office when the article was written. The article then went on to list all 250 of those couples, including my g-grandparents. That was enough evidence for me to purchase a copy of the marriage record from the state of Wisconsin, which gave me another piece of info I needed - my g-g-grandmother's maiden name. I've transcribed the list from the article and added it below. I am convinced that the forms in the state records were filled out by the clerks, as my g-grandmother's name was misspelled (Noland vs. Nolan). So if you find something close (I had some problems distinguishing lowercase "i"s and "l"s, among others), or if you have run into the same problem I had - trying to find marriage records for around that timeframe in Chicago/Cook County - I would suggest a visit to wisconsinhistory.org to see if they actually got married in Milwaukee! Remember, the list below is only a partial list of those who went north to get hitched. Date in 1894; Groom; Bride; Celebrant 5 May; Frank J. Bendt; Anna Krause; Rev. George Hertz 5 May; Frank C. I am also trying to access the Newberry Library to see if they have any telephone books online from the early 1900's online and if those listings (addresses) agree with the ones I have. I am surprised that there isn't more information available. The time span of Prohibition in the US, 1920 to 1933, would have impinged on many if not most of the family histories that we research. In May I am dragging my wife (kicking and screaming :)) to Chicago to visit "home" and the places I remember or have meaning to my Family Tree. It will be my first trip back since the early '80s. St. Adalbert Cemetery (Niles) does have a map they use to identify the current Section where a term grave was located, but they cannot determine precise term grave locations.  Most, but not all, term sections have been identified.  St. Adalbert ceased offering term graves circa 1965...I believe it had something to do with Vatican II.   Ruth --- On Thu, 2/26/09, Anettka@aol.com <Anettka@aol.com> wrote: From: Anettka@aol.com <Anettka@aol.com> Subject: Re: [IL-COOK-CHICAGO] IL-COOK-CHICAGO many bodies in grave To: il-cook-chicago@rootsweb.com Date: Thursday, February 26, 2009, 6:30 PM In a message dated 2/26/2009 3:39:21 PM Pacific Standard Time, il-cook-chicago-request@rootsweb.com writes: I recall Helen Sclair the "Cemetery Lady" saying the cemetery with the most burials in one grave (not plot) was at Calvary Cemetery with 10 (maybe 12). ************************** Basically they do that in Europe all the time since land in some areas has better uses, or is for some reason limited. A family may use a single or some small number of plots many times...They don't plan for bodies being put there and never being disturbed, so they use caskets that will disintegrate as the bodies do. What usually happens is that any bones found when grave is opened is put in an ossuarium with all the other reminants of others bodies. If deaths are not too close together, this works well. Buring a bunch is a grave without any removing remains is not usually possible...unless all prior decay to nothing! At St. Adelbert's, their term graves are 25 years, so I don't know where my ggparents final resting place is since in that family. they all bought term graves... 3. I researched liquor licenses for my Chwarszczynski and Rutkowski families at IRAD a couple of years ago.  I'm at work now and my records are at home, but ChicagoGenealogy is right on about the information they contain.   As I recall, the films run from either the late 1890s or early 1900s through around 1919.  All years are not available in between.  You look the records up by street name and then numeric address.  The licenses were issued in 6 month increments beginning on May 1st and October 1st.  When a license/business changed hands or locations, that is also indicated.   I tracked the saloons of my great grandfather (Valentine Chwarszczynski) in 1913 and two great uncles, one from 1907 to 1914 (Walter Rutkowski) and the other from 1912 to 1919 (Frank Rutkowski), which included location/address changes.   Ruth --- On Thu, 2/26/09, charles tintera <CTINTERA@cfl.rr.com> wrote: From: charles tintera <CTINTERA@cfl.rr.com> Subject: [IL-COOK-CHICAGO] Saloons in Cook County To: IL-COOK-CHICAGO@rootsweb.com Date: Thursday, February 26, 2009, 5:29 PM My Grandfather, father's side, owned or ran a saloon on the east side of Cicero before prohibition.
