This is great Robert! I knew my grandparents took a boat up there and most likely it was this one in the story. The reason that I always heard (at least for my gps) was that my grandmother's parents did not want her to marry my grandfather, as he was 'only' a painter and that was 'beneath' her. They eventually came around though and the family got on quite well. Thank you for posting - it is saved in my family file. Many couples married in locations other than Chicago for a whole range of reasons. If you don't find the marriages you're looking for in Cook County, you should try these popular spots: Lake County, IN Porter County, IN Berrien County, MI Van Buren County, MI Kenosha County, WI Milwaukee County, WI Racine County, WI I wrote an article about "Gretna Greens" for the Newberry Library Weblog some time ago. You might find it interesting. http://www.newberry.org/genealogy/news/default.asp?postid=490 Ginger
The description on this website is very good. You can find it on the 1880 ward map at alookatcook.com or you can find Dekoven st on mapquest. Then go to alookatcook.com By the address, it sounds like it may be near the start of the fire in 1871. The fire academy used to be on that spot when I lived in Chicago. Might be still there. There are only two Thomas Roach /wife Mary in Chicago in the 1900 Census. One in Hyde Park and one in West Town. Neither would be The Sands area. There is one Thomas /wife Maria at South Town. That might be the closest, but am not sure. In the listing, both of the Thomas Roach's also had sons named Thomas and even one a grandson, so several appear associated with Thomas / Mary. Going back to 1880, there is Roach, Thomas, 41, b. Ireland , Mary, 40, b. Ireland , Thomas, 15, b. [son of Thos] Living a 163 DeKoven St. This address IS in the Sands area, I am sure. Interesting is that next door, at 167 DeKoven is Roach, Morris, 45, b. Ireland , Bridget, 42, b. Ireland , Bridget, 12, b. IL , Mary, 17, b. IL Could be related or could not be. Just living too close to not take notice. Taking the info from 1880 [age, place of birth, etc.] it would appear that this might be the correct Thomas Roach 1900 United States Federal Census about Thomas Roach Name: Thomas Roach Home in 1900: Chicago Ward 19, Cook, Illinois Age: 65 Birth Date: Mar 1835 Birthplace: Ireland Race: White Ethnicity: American Gender: Male Immigration Year: 1865 Relationship to head-of-house: Head Father's Birthplace: Ireland Mother's Birthplace: Ireland Spouse's name: Mary Marriage Year: 1865 Marital Status: Married Years Married: 35 Residence : Chicago City, Cook, Illinois Occupation: View on Image Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Thomas Roach 65 Mary Roach 70 Thomas Roach 32 Ellen Roach 22 Thomas Roach 2 Frank Roach 0 Kate Donnegan 50 [32 yr old Thomas' mother in law] xxxxxxxx Do you have dates of birth, names of child [or children] that could help to verify? My library here in Arizona doesn't have access to ProQuest so I'm looking for some help. It appears there are a series of articles on ProQuest regarding a scandal impacting Chicago Alderman James Walsh of Chicago in the late 1890's. Would appreciate a lookup on them. Thanks, Mickey

I'd be interested in this, as my grandparents also got married in Milwaukee. They eloped - took an excursion boat up there from Chicago. This was in 1895. Robert Schiller, Thanks so much for sharing this article. Could you please share the article itself with the List? I wonder if this only applies to Milwaukee or it was trendy to marry in Wisconsin? My gr-grandparents were married in Waukegan (Lake County) in 1891 and I always assumed that there was something more logical to it--to save a few $ makes sense to me. Hi George, great to hear that Mary Jane Davidson was the right gal. From my experience, the church records have given me much more info than the records at the county clerks office. Parents not usually listed on the marriage certificate. I would put my efforts there. Do the marriage records show the name of the priest or the church on it? Nearly all of my experience is with Polish parishes...St. Stanislaus Kostka, St. Aloysius, and St. Hedwig seem to stand out. They all vary a bit in format and content, i.e., St. Stan's is the only one I've seen that indicates the addresses of the bride and groom. Sometimes it seemed to depend upon which priest was making the entry. Some were very diligent and precise in detail, while it was apparent others just wanted to get it over with...with those, you are lucky to get the names and date. The worst were those who didn't even bother to record the marriage entry. I have two of those. One for a cousin on my Mom's side; the church was St. Boniface (1910). The other was for my paternal grandparents; the church was St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral (1916). I petitioned St. Nicholas and the Archdiocese of Chicago Archive Department (St. Boniface's recorded are stored there), providing copies of the County marriage licenses as proof, with a notarized certification on the back indicating the source and verifying that it was a true and correct copy. Both incorporated the information into their records as an addendum. I have seen records for a time frame where the priest mentioned the county in Ireland where the family originated...very helpful, but for the most part, I've only seen the names of witnesses. No parents but that could be because the parents were deceased. Parents are almost always listed, as well as the age and residence of the bride and groom and, often, where they were born...particularly helpful if not in the U.S. Witnesses are also listed, which sometimes connects you to additional family members. Again, this is what is contained in the Roman Catholic church marriage records in that timeframe.
