I would appreciate a look up for an obit for Theresa KRAMER, died Aug. 17, 1907. Buried in Rosehill cemetery. Thanks, Dolly
I always search for the children's names and birth dates first; then I work forward to find the current relatives. For this particular search, I would: 1) check the kids ages from the census records 2) track down the kids on the SSDI 3) check the last address/benefit 4) attempt to find obits from that city 5) check my people finder sites to find the current grandchildren/g-children. ************************************************* -----Original Message----- From: il-cook-chicago-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:il-cook-chicago-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of sjlbuethner-sheminee@att.net Sent: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 10:36 PM To: il-cook-chicago@rootsweb.com; 'pam sherry' Subject: Re: [IL-COOK-CHICAGO] Looking for a family member......... Hi Kate, Hope this is of some help. It was presented to Alice on April 11, 1919. Inside there is a notation for the year 1939 of Past worthy Matrons. The name given is Agnes O. Wilkinson. Under what I think is Past worthy ???? is a man's name of Stanley N. Fel(or e)??? The page is torn off so I cannot make out the rest of his surname. This was found in an attic on 4339 N. Mozart, Chicago, IL on or about 1965. "Silas P. Melander, photographer, was born in Jönköping, Sweden, March 14, 1853. His parents emigrated to this country the following year and settled in Chicago being among the earliest Swedish inhabitants of the city. In 1866, after obtaining his elementary schooling, the son became a photographer's assistant, and two years later established himself as a photographer at 131 Lake St. Here he was burned out in the great fire of 1871, and re-established himself the next year at 88 N. Clark St. In 1879 Mr. Melander built the finest photograph studio in Chicago, located at 208 E. Ohio St., where he is still in business. Mr. Melander is a member of the Trinity English Lutheran Church, and of fraternal organizations he has chosen the I.O.O.F. At this date Mr. Melander is counted with the very few survivors of the Swedish colony in Chicago in the early fifties." I also have a photograph taken by this photographer, but at the time he was partnered with Copelin at 131 Lake St. I was able to date my photo 1868-October 1871. I have no idea if any records survive, and I can't recall offhand where the above info was taken from. -Brenda G. ----- Original Message ----- Subject: [IL-COOK-CHICAGO] old photo taken by Melander Photo, Chicago c. 1870 > Dear Listers, I re-discovered a photograph which I must have downloaded > back in 2007. Dear Listers, I re-discovered a photograph which I must have downloaded back in 2007. I have no idea where I found it, only that it looked as if my father could have dressed in period clothing and posed for it. It could very well have been my great-gr-grandfather or one of his brothers. Does anyone know if the records for the Melander studio still exist and where they are kept? Elizabeth Snow

>From prior answers to this thread, we were told that the Catholic priest's name was Father Bruton and that the church was at Rosecrans, Illinois. I checked volume 2 of "A History of the Parishes of the Archdiocese of Chicago" edited by Monsignor Harry Koenig and published in 1980. On page 1573 in the history of St. Patrick Parish in Wadsworth, Lake County, Illinois it states that "Rev. M. A. Bruton began his work as pastor of St. Patrick Church in 1892." Also on the same page is the following information: According to a history of St. Patrick Church which appeared in "The New World" [This is the official newspaper of the Archdiocese of Chicago and is currently called "Catholic New World".] of Apr. 14, 1900 "Rosecrans (formerly Mill Creed) was a large settlement of Irish farmers, situated on the highway between Rockford and Little Fort (now Waukegan). IT was an out-mission attended by Waukegan. It was well known as the Mill Creek parish until the Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad passed through the settlement, when the station was named Rosecrans. When Father Bruton took up his residence at the station [1892] he named the parish Rosecrans....The Church is still located at Mill Creek, about four miles from Rosecrans." I've looked at the alphabetical index in "Locations of Chicago Roman Catholic Churches 1850-1990" and don't see a church beginning with ROS. I'd suggest you determine the clergyman/priest name and query the Archdiocese of Chicago Archives who will have the answer.
