Elaine - Yes, I do quite a bit of newspaper research, including the Denni Hlasatel, the Dziennik Chicagoski, some German, Flemish, Swedish and French newspapers... in addition to any English-language newspapers on microfilm at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. I hit the ALPLM almost on a daily basis. Valentine - I still research at the IL State Archives... also on a daily basis... for 1916-1947 death certificates, state, federal & Civil War Militia censuses, & anything else I can "dig" up~ If more than 2 days go by without visiting the Archives, one of their staffers usually calls me on the phone to make sure I'm ok! I used this new service within hours of seeing on this listed and was thrilled with the results. However, when I went back a few days later, was disappointed to find that I now had to do it by state, county and draft board. It was much better when all you had to do was put in the name. I wondered if it was a timed maneuver or if I "overused" the service. Did anyone else have this same experience? I have a few more I'd like to look for but don't know counties or even the states for sure. Judith Dombrow Rockville, IN Looking for Dombrow, Angerstein, Ehlers.
Judith, Did you register? I did Sunday and had no problem just now with searching just by last name alone. By the way, thanks Valentine. from all the lists I am on, outside of just a slow system because of this additional load, yours is the first with a complaint about the name image relationship.. why not ask on the list for others to look up a name and see what they get on the image... give name and state or some specific criteria... the opportunity to find info for free is a good one... and it will not last long... so it would behoove you to make sure you are using the right code to get to the image.... ----- Original Message ----- From: Ernest Geissler<mailto:[email protected]> To: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2005 3:24 PM Subject: RE: [IL-CHICAGO] In case you dont already know WWI registrations UNTIL THE 25th Yes, Ancestry has completed quite an undertaking but out of the seven people I looked up not ONE of the images matched to the printed info for the individual. I had extremely good luck with the database, was thrilled to find my father, grandfather, two uncles in it. I also ventured over to the WWII military records and found the notice of my husband being wounded when a Marine during WW2, official notice was sent to his father, and my husband's subsequent enlistment in the Army for service in post-war-Germany. Frankly, I was thrilled with the opening of the database. And, you can't beat seeing those beautiful old writing signatures of relatives on those draft cards.
