Hi, Does any body know what has happened to My Family People Finder, which was on Ancestry.com? Ancestry now has US Public Records Index, is that the same thing? Revamped, or what? Thanks, Sharon Buethner
You can check the My Family People Finder at their main site: www.myfamily.com. Check the tabs at the top. The People Finder is one of them. Cynthia and Pauline, and Ellen Plourde too, I cannot imagine who would not want to be part of your Polish family discovery! I just have learned through the years, that in a family, there is only one who is called, and WE are the ones with exciting lives and wonderful surprises! We are the ones who travel, capture the facts, learn the histories and cultures, and have all the fun. In 100 years, what we do might be so valuable. I know I am biased by my passion, but I would not trade this research activity for anything, even golf, which people say is just as expensive and about as vexing! Regards, Candi in California
When divorce papers are filed, would generally one expect that they would have the place and date that the marriage took place?? Since 1968, I have been searching for the marriage record for my Grandparents, with no luck, at all. Before 1968, I had even asked my Grandfather, and the info he gave me ..... well, another dead end. I was beginning to think that perhaps they just had a "common law" marriage. But, today I ran across an on-line index of Divorce Records in North Dakota [my own State, yet], and was searching for the record of my Uncle. Much to my surprise, I found papers filed not for my Uncle [said Uncle divorced at least twice], but for his parents [my Grandparents]. I knew that there were some pretty "rocky" times, early on in their marriage, and I am pretty sure I know what the "grounds" will be, but I did NOT know that it went so far as filing divorce papers. The index indicates that it was never followed through, so I am only expecting the initial filing papers [Grandpa had an attorney, Grandma did not]. But I am sure hoping for some marriage info .... after all, you would not file for divorce if you never married... However, there may be some question if the marriage was legal, or not, as the Court had imposed a "waiting period" on Grandmother when she was divorced from her first husband [court records show abuse] and this is her 2nd husband. I don't think the dates add up ..... I have ordered copies of the record, and now can hardly wait. Oh, and if you of you have ancestors that went to North Dakota, there are on-line indexes http://www.deathindexes.com/northdakota/ Additional indexes [divorce, bios, naturalizations, etc.] at http://www.lib.ndsu.nodak.edu/ndirs/bio&genealogy/index.html Sharon Buethner
try this on! my grandmother had just gotten away from a man who beat her & had hooked up with my mother's future father. he wanted to get married, she didn't. they had my mother. he tried to get her(nanny) to marry him, but all af nanny's friends convinced her that if they did get married he would just take the baby(mom) from her, so she wouldn't marry him. he was in the military(this is early 40's) & mom & nanny followed him wherever he was stationed. when mom was 4? her father left. he said if he & nanny weren't going to get married he was going to find someone who wanted to marry him. he eventually did have a family. he was the love of her life, she regretted not marrying him, etc... she ended up getting married again, to another wife beater. the last few years of her life she thought she was back in the 40's with him. very sad-but at least she was happy! anyway, in the early 70's dad took mom to visit her father. he opened the door & mom told him who she was & he said i ! don't have a daughter & slammed the door. a few years ago i posted a query about him & got a response from his niece. she wanted to know why i was looking for him & i told her it was just for genealogy research, mom eamiled her & told her we didn't want anything she just wanted to know what kind of man he was. that was the last we heard from her. no responses to emails or anything. nanny wouldn't talk about him so i have very little info to go on. very frustrating!!! it's annoying to hear from a(possible) relative, think you're going to get info & you get nothing! especially when the person who is ignoring you is into genealogy also. i wonder if she has ever run into this problem... what goes around comes around! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have the Polish version of this Irish tale! A little over a year ago I received an email from someone in Poland who was surfing the net and found me and my research of the Pilarczyk family. We exchanged a couple of emails and I was able to send him a copy of his great-grandfather's baptismal record! He knew of relatives that emigrated to New York and asked my help in finding descendants. I was able to get the name and address of a relative from a death certificate. He wrote to them - in perfect English as he lectures around the world in his field of biometrics - but never received a response. I just happen to be working on a letter to this gentleman as we speak. I'm including an outline of the family history (the full history is up to about 30 pages) and a picture of me with his Polish relative and family so he can see we look pretty normal despite our interest in genealogy! I'm also begging him to pass the letter along to anyone in the family who might be interested. I'm hoping he has the holiday spirit and responds. Light a candle for me! Good luck to all of you! I had something similar happen with relatives of mine. These are the only known (at least to me) descendants of my great-grandmother. I wrote to them, told them who I was and that I was interested in finding out more about the family. Never heard a word - until, maybe a year later this couple walked into the bank where my husband was working (just by chance, they did not know who he was or where he worked) and asked if anyone there knew me. He called me up at home and I went and met with them. They did have some family information, and some photocopies of photographs of my great-great-grandparents! After they got back home I wrote them again, and asked it if would be possible to get an actual photograph copied from their copies, rather than the Xerox copy. The wrote back, about 6 months later, and said they did not know where the original photos were - their daughter was the one who had made the copies for me. Twice I have written and asked if they could either give me the daughters address, or if she could contact me - have never heard a peep from them! We are planning a trip to Wisconsin to their hometown next spring, so I will once again try contacting them and see if I can hook up with the daughter - or at least with the photo! These folks are both in their 80's and I suppose they are of the generation that just cannot figure out why somebody would want pictures and information about dead people. Bonnie -- Bonnie J. Good thinking Ellen. There is also the possibility that there are skeletons in the closet that they want to keep hidden. If Ellen's sugar idea doesn't work, then maybe the implied use of a private eye to dig into their lives might loosen them up? How about detecting which church they go to? Send their addresses to your Aunt? Get Mollie Kennedy, the Irish Queen of Springfield, to help? Hello, I was wondering if anyone still has access to the Chicago Tribune Archives. I would appreciate a lookup. Obituary for: Kathleen (or Kate or Katherine- you know the Irish!) LEONARD in Chicago. I am sorry but I don't know the year. Thank you Pauline Leonard
the chicago trib, the times and the daily hearld all use legacy.com along with about 200 other newspapers... one would be doing a service for themselves to make legacy.com a favorite... and dont forget to check the guestbooks of the entries....withithin a month of the first posting... now.. in terms of more than one month, yes ouwill have to consider payment but know that you will be able to see the paper and i think the date that the obit ran and then could approach a library in that area for the listing... guestbooks are good things.. you might get some insit about the person from these signors... insite you may never get from family.....
