sorry for confusion... i know that from the phillipines... this luzon/luzan place... that the dead were not returned home IMMEDIATELY... dont know why exactly buti know that it happened based on my own research... and in my case, i found it using the cemetery as the starting point.. not the other way around as in sharons case... she found the PLACE after she found out abut the delay.... so my point...is if you see something in a death record at a church or at a cemetery and it shows a burial significantly after the death, consider an earlier place fore additional information... reinterments are not frequent BUT when they do occur in non-military instances there is usually a court record or some correspondence between the cemeteries and or the funeral homes and OTHER names may be involved that can offer more avenues to research..... when i said excellent.. it was as a follow up to my suggestion that if people found a name in the link that i submitted that was of help to post it to the list so that others can SEE what is available as well as building the archives with INFORMATION..not just hints and links... is this better? As usual, I don't understand. Sharon said in her original message that Robert died in 1945 and was returned to the states in 1948. Valentine said: "excellent... in that you looked and posted info... but also that there was a delay in the return of the body to the States.... I have seen this before... and from this place LUZON... I am not sure the delay is specific to this place or over the battlegrounds of the world... but it is something that researchers can scout...." I thought you meant the "cause" of the delay, which is what I meant in my inquiry. What else are researchers supposed to research? Then Valentine replies to look at the "date of burial vs date of death". I give up... My BIL was killed in Germany in April of 1945. He was buried in an American cemetery in Germany and years later his widow was given the option of having his body brought home. She opted for this and he was given a military funeral here in 1951. His death is listed in the Du Page list. Grace
Sharon - You say in the first paragraph that you "...found out the delay...". Can you relay it to us? Thanks, Dave Witthans P.S. Valentine sure makes for a lot of work sometimes, eh? ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, January 15, 2006 11:30 AM Subject: Re: [IL-CHICAGO] WWII robert hillman Val, It was because of you -- pushing me to make phone calls that I found out the delay in the body being returned to the States, and where he was killed. I have an old, color photo of Robert's stone at the cemetery [very faded]. I examined it with a magnifying glass and came up with 1945 for date of death. I phoned the cemetery for some info on his father & mother, and asked for Robert's dates, too. The gal kept saying "DATE OF BURIAL" is August 18, 1948. Robert is buried between his parents in Irving Park Cemetery [Hazelcrest - Block #10, Lot 31]. I then tracked down the Tribune info -- on March 15, 1945 he was listed as wounded. But it was the obit, August 17, 1948 showing Robert as KIA on March 5, 1945 that tied it all up. And I probably never would have looked for the obit in 1948 if I had not known that was the date of burial. Of course, the obit state his Grandparents, Morgan & Jean Askew. WHO ?? Val, It was because of you -- pushing me to make phone calls that I found out the delay in the body being returned to the States, and where he was killed. WHO ?? I am still looking for them.... I suspect that Jean Askew is Jenny Lyons Lockard [Robert's maternal Grandmother], who died in ...... Christian County, IL., but have no clue for Morgan.. So Thanks, Val, for pushing me ........ I have also spoken with two of my mother's cousins and one, I found out that the reason that I could not find his mother is 1. she remarried and has a different name and 2. She is still living at 100 years of age!! In the Philippines the principal objective had been Luzon since it was on one of the corners of the so-called strategic triangle. Since it was presumed that the Japanese had massed their principal ground, air, and naval strength in Luzon, United States strategists had planned to gain a foothold first in southernmost Mindanao, then move to Leyte, and finally to Luzon after air supremacy had been gained over that area. But when naval reconnaissance in September 1944 revealed little Japanese activity in the Philippines, Admiral Halsey proposed landing directly on Leyte in October. This change of strategy was quickly approved by the U.S. Chiefs of Staff, who were at that time attending the second Quebec Conference. Strategically the plan was brilliant, because it would force the Japanese to split their forces in the Philippines and practically force the Japanese Combined Fleet to come out in the open to meet the threat. The amphibious assault on Leyte took place on 20 October 1944 with four divisions of the U.S. Sixth Army going in abreast. The invading force included the XXIV Corps from the Central Pacific. Initial opposition was light, but the Japanese who had expected to make their main stand on Luzon decided to shift their remaining air and naval might against the U.S. forces in Leyte. They were also successful for a tame in sending large numbers of ground reinforcements to Leyte, and the Sixth Army found itself engaged in a major struggle. As had been anticipated, the attack on Leyte presented the Japanese navy with a challenge it could not ignore. Gathering together its remaining strength, the Japanese Combined Fleet converged on Leyte Gulf in three columns, and for a time seriously threatened the success of the whole Leyte operation. Actually, the sea battle was a series of engagement's lasting from 23 to 26 October. In the end, Japan's fleet was almost completely destroyed, and for the rest of the war Allied naval forces were in virtual control of the surface of the Pacific. Two months of heavy ground fighting took place in Leyte before American troops had secured parts of the island necessary for air and logistical bases, before the Army Air Forces had gained air superiority, and before naval And air forces had stopped Japanese reinforcing operations. Late in December General MacArthur announced that thereafter the U.S. Eighth Army would assume combat responsibility for the Leyte-Samar area. and http://history.acusd.edu/cdr2/WW2Pics/83241.jpg then scout by date 1994/10/24 and click on the blue copy and paste this 'foreign" info into a translator then convert it to english.... and it should be legible... http://www.ndl.go.jp/jp/data/theme/senryoki/mcj/mcj02-2.html IF SOMEONE on list would like to add a record for ANY WWI vet for the World War II Memorial registry, this is the eaddy... http://www.wwiimemorial.com/registry/edit/donor_nameaddr.asp or http://www.wwiimemorial.com/default.asp?page=registry.asp&subpage=search&drawtable=YES On 1/15/06, .... valentine53179 <[email protected]> wrote: > excellent... > in that you looked and posted info... but also that there was a delay in the return of the body to the States.... > > I have seen this before... and from this place LUZON... Hi, I seem to recall reading not long ago that somebody maybe had a CD for Sweden, and if so, could I please have a look-up? My Gr Aunt married a Sandell, and I am unable to find his father's name. His mother *may have been* Ida M. Petersen, b. 10 Mar 1866 in Sweden I first find them in the 1900 Census in Chicago Sandell, Ida, 34, Mar 1866, Wd, Imm. 1896, 4 kids born, 4 living. , Erick, 9, July 1890 , Clara, 7, Apr 1893 In 1910, they are living in North Dakota, Cass Co Dahl, Joe, 60, M/2, b. Sweden , Ida, 44, M/2, b. Sweden [4 kids born, 4 living] Sandell, Erick, 18, b. Sweden , Clara, 17, b. Sweden In 1920, they are still in ND .. Dahl, Joseph, 64, b. Sweden , Ida, 53, b. Sweden Petersen, Oscar, 49, Single, b. Sweden, Imm. 1888, NA 1894 [Brother-in-law] 1930, Ida is still in ND, but alone .... Dahl, Ida M., 64, Wd, Sweden, 1895 [Servant for Anton Seruel] Ida M. Sandell passed away in Cass Co., ND 3 July 1949 [interesting that took the Sandell name back]. Erick Sandell's Draft Card states that he was born in Kalmor, Sweden on July 8, 1891. My Gr Aunt, Maria Elizabeth Kurtz married [1924] Erick [who went by the name Edward Sandell and by the 1930 Census said he was born in IL. I suspect that neither he nor his mother became US citizens, and he just started using Edward, born in IL. I knew him, and way back in my mind, I know the name Erick, Ida and Clara with this family. Who is the father of Erick & Clara? And what happened to the other two children?? Did they remain in Sweden? Any help will be greatly appreciated .......... Sharon Buethner

They use to have them in Ireland the night before the person was to leave for America because they knew they would most likely never see that person again. A friend wants to have a type of Irish Wake, except this person wants to be alive at the time. (The illness has targeted an expected time of demise.) An "Irish Wake" is one where everyone is having a good time after departure and remembering the good old times. Is there a name or description for a "Live" Irish Wake?
