The two library-based FHC branches that I know about are Newberry and Arlington Heights. I don't think it's too common for public libraries to have that status, but the best way to find out about your local library is to ask. Newberry (goes without saying, I know) and Arlington Heights are both libraries with strong genealogical collections and so it was natural for them to arrange to have the FHL connection . . . Cynthia, can you tell us which library you found that is also an FHC branch? How can one determine whether one's own library (I'm out here in Orland Park) is an FHC branch? Thank you. I see that you mentioned Mesa . . . You should be able to order in Chicago films at the Family History Center there and view them yourself. Once in a great while you might bump into a "restricted film" (one that Salt Lake isn't allowed to lend to branch libraries), but I don't think that would be much of a problem for most Chicago records. Newberry offers a "quick search" option for $7.00/search but I believe that is only for select films already in their collection. http://www.newberry.org/genealogy/quicksearch.html If you order in films at your local FHC it's a little bit less expensive: $5.50 + whatever notification fee they charge (probably $.25-$.50). (FHC film order fees just went up from $3.25, so there used to be a much greater difference.) Also, there are sometimes less expensive options for some types of records. Check the "Lookup List" at the Cook County GenWeb site, for example, or IRAD when it opens again. http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcook/Lookups/lookups.htm http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/irad/iradaddr.html Cynthia ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2006 12:58 AM Subject: Re: [IL-CHICAGO] LDS rolls.... > Would Newberry Library look at the LDS fillms there for me since I no > longer > live in Chicago
Would Newberry Library look at the LDS fillms there for me since I no longer live in Chicago
Can you see if you can find any information on Max Joseph Weintraub at you LDS Library for I can hardly find anything from mine in Mesa and his sister Ida Weintraub Hertzberg. She did not live in Chicago as did her brothers and mother. The information that I have gotten seems wrong
My father told me that if his memory served him right, he use to walk with his dad to Shields Park when he was young to use the bath house there. Is there any way to find out if there was a bath house located at that park or near there? Thank you to all who have helped me out finding information about St. George Parish!!! Now this question... what a wonderfully helpful group you are and thank you once again.

there was a time, when newberry was to be the custodial place for film for the diocese archives... tru, i am pulling that from memory and dont have the LATEST and greatest and havent checked into it via newberry... but... it would behoove researchers to check their OWN regular PUBLIClibrary to see if that library is now considered a BRANCH... there are many libraries which are now... best way to find out is to check AT THE LIBRARY... Interlibrary loan Desk would likely be a good starting point... and if YOUR regular public library is not a branch but has an interlibrary loan program and might be in an area without a FHC, it could be a good thing for the library to pursue! ! ! Newberry has made arrangements to be a "FHL" branch and so you can order in films from Salt Lake there, just like you would at any FHC . . . I don't think Family History Centers order in films from any place other than Salt Lake . . . If one does, I think it would be an exception, not the rule. I wish! Would be very handy sometimes. I'll save Arleen some typing! <smile> 1) Go to http://www.familysearch.org 2) Choose "Explore the Family History Library Catalog" 3) Select "Place search" 4) Search for "Chicago" in the place field (no need to type anything in the "part of" box 5) Select "Illinois, Cook, Chicago" 6) Select "Illinois, Cook, Chicago--Church Records" If the catalog is in a good mood, which it has been, last little while, you will get a list of the Catholic parishes (and records from other denominations) that have been filmed. (There are 262 titles today; if you see fewer, the catalog is having problems again . . . ) 7) Click on the link to read more about each parish's records. 8) Click on "Film Notes" to view film numbers and specific information about records available and the years covered If the catalog doesn't work for you, email me directly. I have the links in a spreadsheet to make things quicker for me . . . bummer... researcher should double check at newberry then... might have to do with the diocese cut off of 1915(?) and the rolls at lds being more inclusive.. newberry might or might not interlibrary loan to fhc? Can anyone tell me if St. George's Church on Wentworth in Chicago is still an acting parish? If not, does anyone have suggestions as to where to write for a copy of a marriage record for that church. The marriage took place in 1914. Thank you
Maybe because we were still fighting a war over there. We went into the second world war in 1941 and some of the bodies were not returned until 1951 and later. When my husband got to the Philippines in 1945 some of the smaller islands still had Japanese soldiers on them. As our armies pushed further north they left pockets of these behind. Some of the POWs had died years before the survivors were liberated. Just my thoughts. Our government was very good about having bodies returned if the next of kin so wished. Also about getting servicemen back to the States when their time was up. I have an English cousin who served in Burma and he had to stay there almost two years because it was not a priority of the English to get their servicemen home. Grace
