Today's Chicago Tribune has an interesting article by Steve Mills about Mary and Chuck Schantag of the P.O.W. Network who say they have exposed close to 1,900 people who have falsely claimed to be prisoners of war. Read the article here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-stolenhonordec23,0,3910740.story I wrote about it here: http://blog.genealogybank.com/2008/12/hunt-is-on-for-phony-pows.html
I was surprised to see Florida State Census records, including years 1935 and 1945 -- new, on Ancestry. Unfortunately, for me, I have very few in Florida, but did verify a couple of names that I knew to be there. They were there, but the state of birth was wrong -- listed as Ohio and both were born in Cook Co., IL. I can not emphasis enough that many records have many errors, and you should not just discount something because it just does not quite match. Not only do mistakes happen, but people "forget", and some people just plain did NOT want be found. Happy Hunting, and hope the Florida Index helps somebody, Sharon
There are only a small handful of Internet sites that are putting up sharp, clear digital images of genealogical records, the kind of resources that genealogists want to use and will rely on for their research. www.FamilySearchLabs.org has been doing just that. They have just added Cook County (IL) Marriage Records from 1900 to 1920 and announced that they will expand these back further to 1871. Cook County - is more than just Chicago - it includes the townships of Barrington, Berwyn, Bloom, Bremen, Calumet, Cicero, Elk Grove, Evanston, Hanover, Lemont, Leyden, Lyons, Maine, New Trier, Niles, Northfield, Norwood Park, Oak Park, Orland, Palatine, Palos, Proviso, Rich, River Forest, Riverside, Schaumburg, Stickney, Thornton, Wheeling, Worth. I wrote about it with an example at: http://blog.genealogybank.com/2008/12/chicago-marriage-certificates-1871-1920.html

You can rent the microfilm of the Cook County death records for the required time period from your local Family History Center; if you live in Cook County, the Family History Center may already have the film. The Washington library in Chicago would also have the microfilm.
