An excellent book is "Challenging Chicago" by Perry Duis. He also wrote an excellent book called "The Saloon," about the role of the saloon in the social fabric of the 19th century in Chicago and Boston. I found both of these in the Boston Public Library. Hi Bonnie: I checked this out, but it looks like only alumni can create an account and log in. Is that correct? Is there a way to log in as a guest/relative? My father went to Tilden in the 1930s (did not graduate) and died in 1979. Bonnie, Thank you for the information about the http://www.cpsalumni.org/ site. I just registered and posted information and photos about my great-grandfather, for whom the Thomas J. Waters Elementary School is named. I then sent the link to my family to share with them. Strangely, last May I contacted the editor of this web site to share historical information about the school and only received back an automatic reply email that said they'd be contacting me. Nobody ever did, so I posted my information under the Shared Stories area. Nancy
Verlaine, Sign in & go to the site map. To get there, look on the bottom right on the first screen after signing in. At the site map look for the words "General Site Information" and click on Historical Attendee Records (1873-1973). There you'll be! Dear Bonnie, cpsalumni.org didn't work for me. Maybe I did something wrong. I was really interested in the site. I registered, and on the next page I had to fill out everything again. Ok. then I went to the section to look up school attendees and it wanted me to register again. I didn't know who to contact or what to do. I also have a school photo of my Dad's grammar school graduation and a list of the people that graduated. I intend to send it to the Il-Cook-Chicago list. I also have my Mom's high school year book. Austin High, 1924. This all sounds so exciting. I hope you can help me or at least tell me how to contact cpsalumni.org. Actually I put this message into drafts and tried again. The same thing happened. I hope you can help. Verlaine

Hi, Does anyone know if there is a site that covers the Cook county Jail for a list of convicts in the 1900's?? I am trying to help someone who had a relative in Cook county in 1900 according to the census. I checked the Joliet one and Genealogy Trails History Group but they do not have anything listed. Thanks, Pam
Bonnie, Thank you. I'm planning to hop over there right now. I appreciate your sending this. Sarah Bonnie Brown wrote: > http://www.cpsalumni.org/ > > This is the Chicago Public Schools alumni page. Hi Mary, Thanks for the tip, I appreciate it. I don't think this one is the right school since the ones my family attended were all public schools. Thank you, Bonnie! This is the best site I've seen all year....okay, the year is only 16 days old, so make that the best site in a long time. Found my whole 8th grade graduation class, as my trial run. Now I get to look for the ancestors! Thanks again! Have you checked to see if the schools have websites? For example, using google for Talcott School Chicago, this is found, though I don't know if there were more than one. Right click on photo to copy. http://www.talcott.cps.k12.il.us/ Mary srose wrote: > Does anyone live near any of the following Chicago schools who would > send me an email picture? > I'm putting together a family gen book and the school pics would be > great especially if they're > pics of the schools back in the 1950's - although a current one would work. > Thank you so much for helping me add to the stories. Lots of school photos copuld be available if everbody did that! Regards, Candi in California

Hi Arleen, I believe they only digitized the licenses, not the applications. Apps contain info like parent names and places of birth. I was told, and I was never able to verify this with any other county rep, that apps would never be released to anyone except the actual bride/groom. This person further stated that apps are kept in a locked vault. Like I said, no one else verified this for me. Thanks for the info. I was hoping later ones had more info but I guess Cook County never changes. Arleen
Does anyone live near any of the following Chicago schools who would send me an email picture? I'm putting together a family gen book and the school pics would be great especially if they're pics of the schools back in the 1950's - although a current one would work.
