    3. Hello Jan. I've tried searching for the two men, Willibaldus and Desiderius, but I've come up with nothing as yet. The father, Willibald, is nowhere to be found in the 1860 US census. It's possible that he had died before that census took place. It's also possible that he's listed on a page that isn't legible, or the name is very badly misspelled. There are several places in the U.S. with the name 'Ottawa'. Some are cities and some are counties, but he just doesn't appear anywhere. I also checked the Canadian records because Ottawa is the capital city of Canada, but nothing shows up there either. The 1860 census record that you found for a Dazri Varicen is most likely Desire, the son. He was living in Chicago, and that's where he later signed up for the Army. I don't think he had changed his name because the census was taken in 1860 and he signed up in 1861. There is one more thing I would like to check out. If I find something I'll let you know. I wish I could have been of more help to you. 3. Dear readers, Since several years I have a problem with finding information about Willibaldus Vereecken the brother of the grandfather of my grandmother and his sun Desiderius. They left Belgium in 1855 and up till now I can't find any information about them. Willibaldus Vereecken was born on the 7th of June 1816 in Stoppeldijk, Netherlands married on the 22nd of November 1837 in Elversele, Belgium Isabella Jacoba de Puijsseleir, born the 3th of February 1811 in Elversele, Belgium and died the 9th of October 1854 in Gend, Belgium. They became 4 children: 1. Desiderius Vereecken, born the 23rd of March 1839 in Elversele 2. Fiodela Guislene Vereecken, born the 20th of July 1840 in Elversele and untraceable since then 3. Joanna Melania Vereecken, born the 20th of October 1841 in Elversele and died on the 19th of November 1841 in Elversele 4. Angelica Maria Clementina Vereecken, born the 6th of November 1842 in Elversele and died the 1st December 1921 in Oostburg, Netherlands. The information I am looking for is about Willebaldus and Desiderius. The information I have about Willibaldus here in Belgium and the Netherlands are 2 remarks in the marriage registration of Angelica who married twice in the Netherlands and in this registration is stated about her father: "father died in Ottawa North America" and "father died in the united states of america". As the first marriage took place on the 14th of July 1869 he must have died before that date. From the Passengers list I know that Willibold Vereeken, 39 year and Desire Vereeken, 17 year arrived in New York on the 14th of December 1855 by the m.v. Henry Reed. Conclusion Willibaldus died in Ottawa in the United States between 14-12-1855 and 14-7-1869. The information I have about Desiderius is that I found his name in the Records Collection United States Registers of Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798-1914, page 230, line number 19, Affiliate Publication Number M233, Affiliate Film Numer 28, GS Film number 350334, Digital Folder Number 004719498, Image Number 00541 with the following information: Name: Vereecken, Desire Relisted: Chicago III Born: Ulversall ( translation of the Belgian name Elversele??) Age: 21 Profession: cooper (info: his father was a brewer) Remarks: Deserted Aug 10/61 from Newport Barracks KY I found may be an interesting supplement in the United States Census 1860 Illinois - Cook - 5th Ward (chicago City) being the name Dazri Varicen, age 20, born in 1840 in Belgium. Is it possible that Desire changed after his desertation of the army his name into Dazri Varicen. So I am intersted in any suplmentarry information about Willibaldus and Desiderius concerning possible marriages and their passing away. Thanking in advance for any help I remain yours faithfully, Jan E.M. 3. Hi Mike, Been thinking about your recent post (below) and looked through the drawer of Chicago maps here at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library and here are the map I found: 1)  1880 Chicago Wards I could make an 11x17 photocopy of this map and send it to you, if you like...let me know. 2)  Clason's Double Indexed Map CHICAGO (The Green Guide Series)  published by The Clason Map Co., Chicago, IL .  This map is undated but appears quite old.  Size approximately 34"x26"; black & white. Though it is not available to check-out, the head librarian would allow me to take the Clason's map (which is laminiated) to a local FedEx Office facility to make a copy and bring it right back.  Unfortunately, the boundaries of each neighborhood are not delineated on this map. 3)  The Chicago Neighborhood Map 2nd Edition - Welcome To BigStick, Inc. - Purchasing Big Stick Products, phone #1-630-432-5006.  Excellent full color map of all Chicago neighborhoods but current; 2nd Edition is probably circa 2007.  Size approximately 38" x 28". I could not take the full color map from the library building because it is not laminated, but both the 1st and 2nd editions of the map are available for purchase on the website at a cost of $35. https://www.etsy.com/listing/534597590/printable-vintage-chicago-neighborhood?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=chicago+neighborhood+map&ref=sr_gallery-1-19 On Sunday, July 7, 2019, 10:12:44 AM CDT, Mike Mcdermott via IL-COOK-CHICAGO <il-cook-chicago@rootsweb.com> wrote: Good morning Chi Listers,Can anyone recommend a map of Chicago showing neighborhood boundaries, like Southside etc. from 1880-1920's?Thank you,Mike McDermott, San Jose, CA _______________________________________________ ==== IL-COOK-CHICAGO Mailing List ====       IL-COOK-CHICAGO@rootsweb.com To contact the List Administrator: Rick Berkheiser, IL-COOK-CHICAGO-owner@rootsweb.com _______________________________________________ Email preferences: http://bit.ly/rootswebpref Unsubscribe https://lists.rootsweb.com/postorius/lists/il-cook-chicago@rootsweb.com Privacy Statement: https://ancstry.me/2JWBOdY Terms and Conditions: https://ancstry.me/2HDBym9 Rootsweb Blog: http://rootsweb.blog RootsWeb is funded and supported by Ancestry.com and our loyal RootsWeb community Links in the message (1) | | | Welcome To BigStick, Inc. - Purchasing ... |

    3. Vince, it took me a while but I found what was at 20 Des Plaines in Chicago. The ED was 103-1696. It was a hotel called the Legion Hotel. It seems to have been large because it took 11 census pages to list all the residents (guests) in the 1940 census. I can send you the 1st page (image # 41) if you'd like to see it. It shows the name of the hotel. I can't find any info on this hotel as it's no longer there. As to James Saunders, I doubt he worked for the Indiana State Prison and lived in Chicago, but it's not impossible. My guess is that he may have been a resident, too. I haven't located James Saunders in the census yet. I also checked the only 2 Chicago City Directories for the 1940s...1945 & 1947. 1945 is missing pages from Cullerton St. to Elizabeth St. 1947 lists 20 Des Plaines and a lot of names, but Edward Hocker isn't one of them. I hope this is of some help to you. Terry -----Original Message----- From: Vincent E. 3. Rick, I hope Hazel is still monitoring this List. I took almost a week to reply to her because I was waiting to see if someone with more information would reply, but no one did until after I posted. She hasn't replied to any of the posts. 3. Hazel, The Beecher City that you found is more than likely not the Beecher City in Effingham County, Illinois. More than likely your Beecher City, Illinois is Beecher, Illinois which is in eastern Will County, Illinois. The town/city of Beecher, Illinois is located along Illinois Highway 1 which is also known at Dixie Highway. Beecher, Illinois is less than 10 miles north of Grant Park, Illinois. I would strongly suggest that you do your researching in Beecher, Will County, Illinois rather than the town in Effingham County which is at least 150 miles further south.
