    2. There's something fishy about this story. The federal government didn't pay pensions to Confederates, and neither did the state of Illinois. Benjamin would have needed to have been a resident of a state that paid Confederate pensions in order to receive one. If he received a pension, and was really living in Illinois after the war, it was because he was able to prove some service in the Union Army or Navy. Tom Pearson
