The Adjutant General's report and Dyer's Regimental History are at this URL: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw/reg_html/art_001.htm He was listed as an unassigned recruit when he deserted. Since he was only in the unit for a week, it's almost certain that he was never assigned to a battery. You might try getting his service record.
