Daily reports were kept for each company and kept a count of the number officers and men available for duty. It was prepared by the 1st Sergeant and approved by the acting company commander, nominally the Captain. The daily reports should be in the Regimental books which are kept by the National Archives. Names are generally not mentioned in the reports except for the ones preparing and approving the report. I was recently at the National Archives and looked through the Regimental Books for the 51st Illinois Infantry. The daily reports didn't start until they went into the field in March 1862 and were kept pretty well until the Atlanta Campaign. From that point on, the reports either were not kept with as much dilligence or did not make it back to the archives. I hope this helps, Jim Willlison Craig Ayler wrote: > Robert, > > Excellent Question! I have to GG Uncles from IL. I haven't had much luck > looking for daily reports.
