    3. The medal system as we know it today wasn't really in effect during the civil war - except for the MOH. Honors were generally given by brevet - or honorary prompotion - to a higher rank. This type of honor went mainly to officers, naturally. The Confederate MOH was proposed during the civil war, but was not established. An order for a Confederate "medals and devices" was approved by the Confederate Congress on April 14, 1862, and a list of awardees was developed. However, no medals were produced and none were awarded. In 1896, General Stephen DIll Lee made a proposal that the Confederate soldiers needed to be remembered and honored, beginning the SCV or Sons of Confederate Veterans. It wasn't until 1977 (yep, that's 1977 - no typo) that the SCV began issuing posthumous Confederate Medals of Honor. The first went to Private Samuel Davis of Coleman's Scouts. The United Daughters of the Confederacy developed the "Southern Cross of Honor," but that was in 1898. So, medals were almost non-existant. GOOD FOR YOU!! What were the medals that the Confederacy gave out?? Rhonda Houston Rhonda, You said: "And of course, all the men listed were from both sides, Confederate and Union. - Rhonda Houston" I'm pretty sure that the U. S. Government never presented a MOH to a Confederate soldier. After all, they were the "enemy" to the Union. (And I say this as the proud descendant of 6 Mississipi cavalry soldiers). I've scanned the U.S.Army MOH list, and couldn't find one. Do you have a citation that states otherwise? I know that the Confederacy gave out medals - but not the U.S. MOH. Jack
