    3. I have an obituary for one brother that states that he and his brothers enlisted in the Union Army. I have located one of them in Co C 99th Ill Inf as a 2nd Lt (Wm L. Carter). In addition to the obituary, I have a bio I found online for one of the other brothers who had attended St. Louis Medical College, graduated in 1857, and then it states he joined the army as a surgeon in 1862. His name is Charles L. Carter. I have been to numerous databases, but have been unable to locate him in any of them. I have found a Charles L. Carter that was a private but no surgeon. The brothers supposedly joined in Illinois after taking their mother there from MO to keep her safe from the war. William enlisted in Pike County, IL. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    3. If you haven't yet, you should request a pension file from the National Archives. If they don't have the pension record, you could ask for the service record. Go to nara.gov and see which form you need (I can't remember offhand). I THINK, but am not sure, that the pension records may also be on microfilm through the LDS (the Mormons) Jill ----- Original Message ----- From: "K Callan" <kcallan738@earthlink.net> To: <IL-CIVIL-WAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 07, 2001 2:35 AM Subject: [IL-CIVIL-WAR] Need Assistance > I have an obituary for one brother that states that he and his brothers > enlisted in the Union Army.
