No, not the only cause, but the main cause. Jefferson and other founding Fathers saw the conflict coming 50 years earlier. How many more Negroes would have died in bondage in that "20 years" and how many more would have suffered? My apologies in advance for this soapbox speech for those who are here for Illinois history.
