To all; I'm researching my gggrandpa's Cavalry regiment for a painting I plan to do. I'm hoping someone can answer some questions that I have.... Question #1: Can anyone tell me what the uniform for a private in Co. E, 17th Illinois Cavalry would look like? From several photos of various Illinois Cavalry regts., I assume that it was a shell jacket with a high collar and two buttons on each side. But in most of the photos I've seen, there's no yellow trim on the collar and cuffs like you would expect on a cavalry jacket. Could the trim be another color? Would the trim be absent? Question #2: Would a private have worn a kepi or a Hardee hat? Again, I've seen several photos of soldier in Illinois Cavalry regts., and most seem to have worn short Hardee style hats. Was that a dress hat, or would they wear the Hardee hat into battle? Question #3: I have a hand-written note from Captain Charles Parker of the 9th US Cavalry (post-war), to my gggrandpa, Simeon Shaver, Co. E, 17th Illinois Cavalry. It reads... Capt. 9th Cavalry Fort Robinson Neb Charles Parker Simeon Shaver Private Co. E 17 Ill Cavly. "Most of the boys are calling upon me. Leo Grollmond came yesterday. Yours today. Hope your attorney will get all the dates right. Poor Crotzenburg died first." C.P. Capt. 9th Cavly. Does anyone have a guess as to what this note is discussing? Was veterans legally required to go through lawyers to collect a pension? Thanks! Chris Fossitt
Greetings. After I sent my last post, I got a reply from a list member that had a virus. It came with an attachment. It quoted my message, and told me to "look at the attachment". I deleted it unopened. I don't open attachments as a general rule, and I knew about this virus anyway through other listservs. Apparently, what it does is go through your inbox and send a copy of itself to everybody who sent a message which is unread. Update your virus programs. I know that by virtue of sending this I'm going to have it sent to me again, but I figured it was worth it to warn other list members.
If you haven't yet, you should request a pension file from the National Archives. If they don't have the pension record, you could ask for the service record. Go to nara.gov and see which form you need (I can't remember offhand). I THINK, but am not sure, that the pension records may also be on microfilm through the LDS (the Mormons) Jill ----- Original Message ----- From: "K Callan" <kcallan738@earthlink.net> To: <IL-CIVIL-WAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 07, 2001 2:35 AM Subject: [IL-CIVIL-WAR] Need Assistance > I have an obituary for one brother that states that he and his brothers > enlisted in the Union Army. Have you checked the Adjutant Generals report from Illinois? It is the best place to look to begin.
I have an obituary for one brother that states that he and his brothers enlisted in the Union Army. I have located one of them in Co C 99th Ill Inf as a 2nd Lt (Wm L. Carter). In addition to the obituary, I have a bio I found online for one of the other brothers who had attended St. Louis Medical College, graduated in 1857, and then it states he joined the army as a surgeon in 1862. His name is Charles L. Carter. I have been to numerous databases, but have been unable to locate him in any of them. I have found a Charles L. Carter that was a private but no surgeon. The brothers supposedly joined in Illinois after taking their mother there from MO to keep her safe from the war. William enlisted in Pike County, IL. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Doug: Go to this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw/reg_html/cav_013.htm There is a history of both the original unit and the consolidated unit. Both the adjutant general's report and Dyers' Compendium are available here. I think you should find all you need. The complete roster of the original company E is on line, as are all the rosters of the consolidated regiment. I have been looking for more info on 13th calvary, company E Illinois. The battles listed by the Adjutant General seems to only begin in the year 1863, yet i know they were in battle elsewhere prior to this as they mustered late in 1861. I have an ancestor that was discharged in 1862 due to illness and was brought back to his home in Olney Illinois and died a few weeks later. There are handed down stories as to where he saw action but at those places, there is no record of them.. I have heard they split up the different units and its possible he went one way while some of the other companies went another, then rejoined.. Is it possible to get a more detailed look at what this unit was involved in.. thank you doug

I am trying to locate an ancestor, James W. Kirtley, who was supposed to have been a Union soldier in Illinois. However, I've looked in all the available indexes, under all possible variations of his name, and I cannot find him. My grandmother told me the following story: James was a Confederate sympathizer who joined the Union army to spy on the Yankees. In December 1861, James's unit (I don't know what kind) was supposed to march through Cairo on Christmas day. His wife and daughter stood in the balcony of a hotel and watched the troops march by, but James did not appear. It turned out that he was dead, having swallowed poison upon discovery. Supposedly, he was buried on the grounds of the state mental hospital at Anna, Illinois. Now, I have serious doubts about this story. However, it does seem that if there's any kernel of truth in it, maybe the records of the military unit would reflect this incident. If nothing else, if I knew which units were in the Anna vicinity before Christmas 1861 and then marched through Cairo on Christmas day, I might be able to review the names of the soldiers. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance, Nina Scholtz

Phyllis There was no 1st Regiment of Illinois Infantry. There was a 1st Illinois Cavalry. Assuming your man was in the 1st Cavalry, it will be very difficult to find anything regarding photographs of that regiment. NOT impossible - but difficult.
