Great idea, I'm looking for a photo of the 102nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company C and my great-grandfather James M. Beardsley. I have never seen a picture of him in uniform. He had a cousin, James Marvin Beardsley a Major in the 13th Illinois Volunteer and a brother Elisha Beardsley also in the 13th. Thank you for any help, Barb Appleby600@aol.com
Hi, everyone. I now have a site about the 89th Illinois Infantry (the Railroad Regiment). The site includes information about the formation of the regiment, and the regiment's part in the battles of Liberty Gap and Stones River, TN, and Pickett's Mill, GA. The URL is: http://www.geocities.com/pearson63147/index.html. Thanks, Tom Pearson
This is a great idea asking for photos of the various units! My gr-uncle Norman LaDiew was the bugler for his two units. Does anyone have a photo of the 4th Cavalry Co. C and/or the 12th (reorganized) Cavalry Co. S? It would be so wonderful to see a picture of him, there isn't one that I'm aware of aside from this lead. Thank you in advance, Lydia Granda
Does anyone know where I might find photos of the 73rd Inf, Company C? Thanks! The Illiinois site probably has the difinitive information on the 21st - including Dyers Compendium and the Adjutant's report, plus all of the rosters transcribed. My experience is that separate books on individual regiments are very rare. Good luck. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Kjangard@aol.com> To: <IL-CIVIL-WAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, May 12, 2001 7:17 PM Subject: [IL-CIVIL-WAR] 21st ILL > Hello Civil War researchers, > > Does anyone know if there is a website and or any books available on the 21st > ILL. The hat sounds like either a Hardee or a slouch hat. The crossed swords designate cavalry. (Bugle is infantry, crossed cannons is artillery, small castle is engineers) The trousers that look white may actually be sky blue - the standard color for union trousers. If the jacket is rather short and tight fitting, it is probably a shell jacket - however 5 buttons would be unusual. Shell jackets for enlisted men had 12 buttons and sack coats had 4. However, many soldiers wore what they had - government issue or not. ----- Original Message ----- From: "edcrow@msn.com" <edcrow@email.msn.com> To: <IL-CIVIL-WAR-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 10, 2001 9:50 PM Subject: Re: [IL-CIVIL-WAR] Illinois Cavalry > The picture I have of Solomon Peter Crow Co. My last email was in error. The cavalry shell jacket has 12 buttons on the front, not 9.
The answer to your questions may be "It's hard to say" However, you might get some info by going to this URL: http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/PhotoDB.html This site has a catalog of photographs from the civil war. When you get to this site, type "Illinois Cavalry" in the search box. You will get another page with two or three check boxes, including "Illinois" and "Cavalry". Check both of those boxes and click on "find matching photos". You will get a list of photos, many of which are from the 17th Illinois. You can order photos, but they will send you a photocopy before you have to pay for them. I did notice a description of one soldier: RG98S-CWP62.29 "Waist up image of Pvt. Arthur N. Root, Co. B, 17th Regt., Ill. Vol. Cav. His kepi is decorated with his branch of service, co. letter "B", and regimental number '17'." So, I suspect that many of the 17th did wear Kepis or Bummers rather than Hardee hats. Incidentally, the word "Kepi" is often misused in referring to a Forage Cap or "Bummer". They look much alike, except the bummer has a higher crown, and tends to "flop" over when well worn. The true Kepi has a lower crown, and pretty much keeps it's shape. You might also want to check this site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw/photos/cwphoto.htm It has many photos on line of Illinois soldiers, some Cavalry. Page 1 has a 16th IL Sergeant wearing a Hardee. Page 2 has a Lt. and a Capt. wearing a Hardee. Page 6 has one wearing a kepi. There are also a mixture of shell jackets and fatigue blouses (sack coats). For a private, the shell jacket would have 9 buttons, a sack coat 4 buttons. Some of the shell jackets are trimmed, some are untrimmed. See what I mean about "it depends?" Hope this helps. Jack Cox Researching Co. K, 7th Ills, Co. But in most of the photos I've seen, there's no yellow trim on the collar and cuffs like you would expect on a cavalry jacket. Could the trim be another color? Would the trim be absent?
