    3. Greetings. I am researching my ancestor, Daniel Nelson Freeman, who enlisted in F Co., of the Illinois 130th Volunteer Infantry soon after the outbreak of the Civil War. He was captured at the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads and served as a POW at Camp Ford in Tyler TX. Through the Illinois State Archives, I have found a copy of the original muster roll for his company plus I have his pension papers from the National Archives. I was wondering, though, if anyone was aware of published accounts of the 130th? Diaries, narratives, whatever? Thank you Jill

    2. Warren, Yes, there were several enlistment requirements: Over 4 ft. 11 in.; under 6 ft. 6 in.; must have front teeth; must not be a drunkard; must have no venereal diseases. Front teeth requirement was so that man could bite open a black powder container for a rifle-musket. Tom Pearson

    2. Regarding what prison, my guess would be that he was not taken to a prison but paroled and probably went or was sent, the first time, to Camp Chase, Ohio (Columbus) which, among other things, was a holding place for paroled Union soldiers. It is also possible that he would have been sent there the second time, also, but by then there were numerous small locations that were used in much the same manner. Sorry this probably does not help a lot.

    3. Eva, I don't know anything about the monument, but the name on it has to be William C. Seidel. You should go to this site and enter the name "Seidel" http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/genealogy/civilwar.html You will find three Seidels. Illinois Civil War Veterans Database Search NAME RANK COMPANY UNIT RESIDENCE _______________________________________________________________________________________________ SEIDEL, GEORGE PVT E 82 IL US INF BLOOMINGTON SEIDEL, RUDOLPH CPL E 58 IL US INF SOMONAUK SEIDEL, WILLIAM C PVT A 140 IL US INF STERLING Also, look at this page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilcivilw/r155/140-a-in.htm William C. Seidel is listed as above, enlisted Jun 18, 1864, Mustered out Oct 29, 1864 The One Hundred and Fortieth Infantry was organized at Camp Butler, June 18, 1864, and mustered into the United States Service on that date and on the same day left by rail for Cairo; thence by boat for Memphis. >From Memphis it marched to White River, a distance of thirty miles east, and was there formed into divisions and placed at different points along the line of the railroad between there and Holly Springs. It remained there about three months guarding the railroad, after which it moved to Memphis and did guard duty until ordered to Camp Fry, Chicago, for muster out, which occurred October 29, 1864. After having given up their arms they were solicited by Adjutant General Fuller to re-organize and march through Missouri in pursuit of General Price, which they did. This trip occupied about 6 weeks, when the Regiment returned to Camp Fry, and was finally dismissed after serving about 5 months.
