    2. I used the Illinois Marriage Index to find my gggrandfather Tobias Bender. I was not aware that he was married twice before I used this index. I also discovered that someone else was interested in the Marriage of Tobias Bender to Elizabeth St. Clair (Sinclair) my gggrandmother, but I have not received a response to my communications although I do not receive any error messages so the messages must be getting through. If you are interested in Tobias Bender and or Elizabeth St. Clair (Sinclair) I would appreciate hearing from you. They lived in Fulton, County, Illinois and were married in the 1850s. 3. Bill, The Illinois Marriage Index has been a wonderful tool for me. However, one of my ancestors is listed as Hoffie instead of Hobbie. I found this marriage by entering the bride's name. Perhaps entering different spellings might help. Good luck. Carol

    3. You have to keep in mind that several counties have had courthouse fires or other disasters which PERMANENTLY eliminated certain records. If the records were burnt the county can't give them to the state for the marriage record index. One of those courthouses that burnt was Logan. 2. James R Cazier
    3. Bill, I have seen this happen before, where the marriage index does not include a license that actually was issued. About the only way to know for sure is to go, or have someone go for you, to the County Clerk's office and ask for permission to go through the actual marriage license files for the time period you are concerned with looking for the actual license. The Clerk may be reluctant to let you do this, as those records, especially that old, are quite fragile. I you can't do it yourself, you might contact one of the local society members who knows the Clerk well. The Clerk might let someone they know & trust do the looking for you. The other possibility is that the marriage occurred, but that the license was never returned to the courthouse. It that's the case, there is no record of it and you'll have to find another way to confirm the marriage, such as probate records or grantor deeds for land they may have owned & sold. Good Luck! 2. James R Cazier
    3. Bill, I wouldn't rely on the IL statewide marriage index. I have checked for a number of my ancestors with no success, when I found them in county indexes. The state-wide is a work in progress & there are many counties that have not been entered yet. I also suspect that in the counties that have been entered, the entries are not complete. Suggest you check with each suspect county's genealogical society. Most of them have extracted & published the local county marriage index. If you need addresses, go to the USGENWEB project page, then to the state, then to the appropriate county page. Most of them have the address of the local society. 2. Does anybody have any information out there regarding the first marriage of Thomas Jefferson Scroggin to a Mary (?) approximately 1859, but not sure. I have checked the Illinois Marriage Index but it does not list this marriage. I'm reasonably sure that he married his first wife in Sangamon or Logan County. Thomas was known as Jefferson and is on the 1850 Logan County census living with Leonard K. Scroggin family, and in 1860 he is listed with John England family. So, perhaps he married a Mary England? 1. Re: [IL-CENTRAL] UPDATE: MOELLER/MILLER
    2. Dorothy Nanninga Sewell
    3. Jackie, Try also the spelling of Müller or Mueller. Many of the Americanized Millers from this area were spelled this way in Germany. If you purse your lips as if to say u but say the e sound instead you will have pronounced the German ü . You can then understand why the name became Miller. There are web sites and mailing lists for both the Oldenberg area and the nearby Ostfriesen area. Have you checked the Germans to America book series? There are some problems with the list but it is a good secondary source and you might get some leads there. I can't seem to find the address for the list of libraries which have all or some of the books but I know they have them at Peoria. Good luck. 1. [IL-CENTRAL] UPDATE: MOELLER/MILLER
    2. Jackie (Woodward) Johnston
    3. I am looking for any information on the MILLER/MOELLER families of Garret, Johann, Charles, Henry, Ann and Margaret. They came to America from Oldenburg, Germany at least by the 1850's. Do not know if their parent came with them. Have not been able to find them yet. They moved to the Logan, Menard, Sangamon and Tazwell counties areas of Illinois. They Americanized their name to "MILLER" at some point. Most of the family resided in the area except, Margaret she married a man with the last name WINNER and moved to California. Charles moved Hedrick, Keokuk County, Iowa. A couple of Johann/John's children would reside in the area. Their names were: Minnie (she married August ZORN),Herman, Edward and Charles. Two step-children from his marriage to Louise (GREBE) LUNING would live in the area also their names Henry LUNING and Fredricka Henrietta "Gettie" LUNING(married a Herman or Harmon YOUNG). Two of his children would move to Iowa. Their names were Gustave and George MILLER and thei lived in the North English, Iowa County, Iowa. Two children stayed in the Wright City, Warren County, Missouri area . Their names were Henry and William. Other names mentioned were AMMERKAMP,RADENMACHER, and HASENKAMP. They were several Henrys in this family. Spelling of names may vary. Any information on these families would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Jackie johnston@tnweb.com
