Ages are often incorrect on censuses. First, they don't subtract from the census year because they haven't had a birthday yet that year, but usually subtract from the year before, so someone who is 16 in 1880 would be born abt. 1863. Secondly the 1900 censuses are often off by a year, so Feb, 1861 could be Feb, 1860 or Feb, 1862. Thirdly, the person answering the census taker may not give the correct age, but only what age he thinks. Ages weren't as important in those days, and most people didn't have birth certificates. I've had people that only aged 6 years when 10 years had passed between censuses. I suggest that you get some death certificates to find out more information.
