Looking at census, the only "Anthony" by any last name that comes close for 1900-1920 in the entire state of Illinois born in either England or Canada is: Anthony Burman age 47 (in 1920 census), born England, came to US in 1907, and works with Coal. In the Illinois Death Index 1916-1950, there are no Anthony Behan or Bahan. Maybe someone else can come up with more? Anthony Behan (also seen spelled Bahan) was born 1872 in Middlesex England. He and his brother John (b. 1875 in Middlesex England) were sent to Canada from England as part of the Home Child Program. Anthony and John entered the United Stated from Canada circa 1890 to work on boats on the Great Lakes. John had mentioned to someone that Anthony lived Milan (Rock Island County, Blackhawk township) Illinois. during the early 1900's. I have some information on John but NOTHING on his brother Anthony. Hi - John could have gone by the Italian translation. Unfortunately, I haven't found them in Italy yet, so I'm not sure of his original name. It could have been any of the following ... I have also found that the soundex code doesn't always cover how "sereno" got recorded. I've seen sadeno and sallino (evidently the rolling 'r' wasn't spoken very well). I was told that John tried to "Americanize" the family as soon as possible (including name changes). In 1900, they had been in the US for over 10 years, so I just assumed he had already changed to John. I do know that my great-grandma was pretty fearful of the government, so I guess it's possible they avoided the census taker. I'm currently "browsing" 1900 census images in the area around where they lived in 1910. Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated.
