    1. [IGW-CC's] Confusion regarding boards and surname helper
    2. There is some confusion among new hosts about the boards (for queries) and surname helper. GenConnect is the system that makes the query, obits, bios boards. Surname Helper is the system that makes your surnames searchable. They are two separate systems but they work together. If you go to your query board and click on the link that reads Surname List it will take you to another page with all the surnames for your county. On this page it will say: "This surname index page was generated for the Londonderry, Ireland pages by Surname Helper. The Londonderry, Ireland pages are managed by Carol Hepburn. " This is the page that is giving out misinformation. Your query board will still have your email on it (at the very bottom of the page) but this page will have Dick McCoach's name and email on it. The return link will be to your website. This is the page we need to update so that our visitors don't get confused. If you visit this page and your name appears where it belongs (like mine does) then you are all set and don't have to worry about a thing. If however, the page shows Dick's name you need to go to the change form and reset your query board password. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/signup/change.html If you don't know your password, you can ask for your password to be emailed to you by clicking on the button that says mail me my password. When you get the email - try your password again. If your password still doesn't work - you need to email Elaine Burkove at st_rays@hotmail.com and tell her that your password is invalid and ask for a new one. Your password should work ig you have been admin'ing your board - removing queries and such. Also, make sure you are putting in your board's url correctly. On this form you must put in (the beginning of the string is already there so just add this part) /Ireland/Armagh (example). If you put it in wrong you will get a FILE ERROR! 3. Carol & all: I think that the surname helper page is inputting the name of the last person that accesses the GenConnect admin pages for any county board. Dick's name was on the surname list for Co. Tipperary last evening because he had taken over the extra boards. When I went in and changed something on the query board through admin, my name again appeared on the surname list in place of Dick's. >From this I am inferring, that at any time that Dick goes into any of the extra boards through the GC admin system - his name will again appear as the name of the site owner on the surname page. 3. Carol: I shouldn't be having any problem with this as I was working on my surname boards all last night (adding in the connecting board codes that Don had mentioned) there was no problem with anyone else having a board - that is why I tested it on my surname board. It certainly didn't update to my GC password, and won't take the 'surname helper' password either. 2. Donkelly
    3. For those of you who want to link to your cluster pages from your (upper left corner) of your GC query page. Joan Young of GC kindly provided the code. Code predicated upon query and cluster pages being in same subdirectory. Change words to those which apply to your county. Back to County Leitrim, Ireland</a>Other County Leitrim, Ireland Boards; <a href='./LeitrimBibl'>Bible Records</a><a href='./LeitrimBios'>Biographies <a href='./LeitrimObits'>Obituaries</a>Also see<a href='http://www.rootsweb.com/~irllet/index.htm'>IrelandGenWeb To break lines, use the common <br>following</a> Please, html code writers, note the ' used in place of " wherever found. Add more to the code because every type of board uses the same code. Just make sure that you have LeitrimWill instead of LeitrimWills or Leitrim Wills. Very important to get the name (LeitrimWill / whatever)spelled correctly. Don

As I didn't remember my password, I clicked on the send password button. When I input the password on the surname page again, along with the path as per their instruction, then the page would return with the password in the path line and a message that the password (that they just sent me is invalid) - it doesn't work either with my GC password. 3. One clarification...... this was discussed at great length (for days, weeks) on the L_O_A_F-L list (List Owner's Alternative Forum) MyFamily.com did indeed "acquire" all Rootsweb properties, including the domain names of usgenweb.org and worldgenweb.org (which Charles Merrin, the new General Manager of Rootsweb stated that while MyFamily.com did acquire it, they were going to allow the USGW and WGW to maintain it, but that's just a verbal agreement between them to my knowledge, not a contract. They own the domains just as Rootsweb did prior). As for GenConnect, that system was also a property of Rootsweb.com Inc. and as such was sold in this acquisition. There was some discussion as to what this meant, and basically the GenConnect staff and the HelpDesk staff said that while the posts remained with the individual posters as to copyright, the system was now part of MyFamily.com. All former "Rootsweb staffers" who remained/remain (I'm told several left) are thereby now on MyFamily.com's payroll. This would include HelpDesk and GenConnect staff to my knowledge. I wrote several days ago to Mr. Merrin about this situation. I have not heard back. I don't know exactly what this means as I am aware that previously he answered emails fairly quickly. Maybe (hopefully?) they are "looking into all this". This is all a lot to take in, and a lot to wade through, understand and make sense of. But being informed is better than staying in the dark and just allowing things to happen to us, in my opinion. 1. [IGW-CC's] Greetings All
    2. Donkelly
    3. I still work all night at Intel until Wednesday morning. Consequently, I sleep most of the day, but I also read everything posted to our CC list. I cannot at this point respond individually, but I note general agreement that GC should not link to our page URLS, state a title on their pages, or say or do anything to lead any visitor to believe that they are part of the IrelandGenWeb project. We have a lot to straighten out. If we decide to keep the GC pages we have, I am in favor of that, but I insist that our rules and our coordinators be honored and respected for the work they have done maintaining those pages for years. I have been looking into things. Like USGW, GC has their files on RW.....and like USGW, GC is an independent initiate. I have been looking for, but found no evidence that USGW or GC was purchased by MFC......so that being the case, GC can make and enforce, or try to enforce, their own rules. On the other hand, our rules for query boards was built around the rules for GC boards. If GC rules have changed, and it appears they have, we do not have to change our rules to accommodate GC changes. So all we have there is the long standing connection between IGW and GC. If GC wants to keep that connection, then GC must compromise and accommodate our rules. >From a legal standpoint, the jury is out, but it looks like we can legally do some things to protect ourselves. In no certain order: Demand that no links be established from any GC page not already in the IrelandGenWeb project, the main national page, nor to any county page. That such GC pages cannot say they are XXcounty manager or use any language to lead visitors to believe that GC or a GC manager has anything to do with any IGW Project. We can put disclaimers on all of the (outlaw?) pages that the subject page is not part of the IGW project and the managers of those pages are not connected with IGW. NOTE: Make it shorter......and make it nice. Visitors are not our targets. Then, we may have the spam angle. After all, GC no longer collects raises funds for the Rootsweb Servers, so the banners on the pages seem to be raising money for owners of GC. That makes GC a profit making commercial business to which we can deny links to our free genealogy sites. On the spam angle, the ISP involved, but be sure it is who we think it is, might respond to our rights not to be spammed. Lastly, we really have good reasons for refusing links. Visitors will come to those GC pages. Some visitors may put porno on those pages, or otherwise post inappropriately. With one person to manage 300 sites, it could be weeks before inappropriate content is removed. Meanwhile, who will be blamed? The IGW CC page it links to of course. We do not have to accept that risk. Well, I am sleepy....and put this together extemporaneously to let you know I was reading and thinking. I want to all to think about these Ideas. I want you all to think about other good ideas posted by other CCs here, good ideas all. I want to also thank Carol for her great idea. Maura has many good ideas that need to be refined <grin>. We solicit several new ideas for legal things we can do to save our IGW project from being victimized like this. I propose that CCs who have GC pages they want to keep, go to your pages and make sure, as mine was, that you can still maintain them, that your password has not been removed. I see no dark intent here........I think a lot of mistakes were made. I believe if we keep our heads, most or all of those mistakes can be rectified. NOW PERSONALLY: I was disappointed by Dick's actions because adding cluster pages to every county was one of my planned projects for Ireland, even if we had to have a cluster pages committee to keep them up. The big payoff would be accessibility by search engine at the national project of every cluster page in the Ireland Project. Since Dick took all of the pages, and probably will not remain in the IGW Project, now our plans to use GC must be changed to another query system. So you see, GC didn't have to give away all of those pages. All they had to do was ask me if I wanted them because I had planned to ask anyway. NOTE: Maura keeps reminding me <grin>that I never announced the resignation of Dick from County Dublin and the IrelandGenWeb Project. I want nothing read into that except what I said. I gave The Dublin CC until Monday night at midnight to remain CC of Dublin provided that he asked the permission of every CC to link to their pages, and offered any who wanted to option to maintain their own county cluster pages. After all, if Dick is paid to do this, he will be paid no matter who maintains the sites. So as I see it, having three hundred sites to manage is no advantage at all. 2. Drats! I was afraid of that. The site manager password is usually controlled by the GC board. Since Dick got in there - the password is obviously changed to match his. Here is a suggestion: Go to http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/signup/change.html and put in your board urls (if you have queries, obits - do each one). When it loads your admin information - go to the bottom and put in your same password as you are using and check the (update surname helper box). Press submit. This may reset the surname helper password and then you can make the change to the site managers page. If this doesn't work - Patti Lindsey is the person to help out. She is very nice and has been helpful in the past. 3. Sheila, That may have been how it's worked for the USGW (where I also took on some boards) but it's -not- the way it worked with boards affiliated with the WGW. This was confirmed by Joan Young, and the "change in policy" was never officially announced, and the wording on the pages is still questionable. The issue is not who has how many boards.... the issue is the treatment of the hosts by the GC Staff members, the deceitt involved by a (now former) host, and his attempt to undermine this project through his conduct, not to mention his absolute refusal to even acknowlege emails and his passing off our pages (which are OUR intellectual property according to US Copyright Law) as -his- by registering them with GC as "the url of _your_ international page". If this all doesn't bother you, fine. However, it does seem to bother most of us. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat/instruct.htm

    1. [IGW-CC's] boards
    2. Sheila
    3. Way back in last year they offered all the boards to the county coordinators. And if the person wanted them they could have them, but if the person did not want them they would be put up for adoption for I assume anyone who would be willing to administer them. I wanted to be sure that I had control of the Sligo boards to care for them properly so I took them all. I also took all of Venango and McKean County. I have since given the Venango baords to a wonderful volunteer for Venango and she administers them. I trust her, she loves the site as much as I do. It is work to keep an eye on all the boards, so having Penny take care of Venango has helped me. However, by taking them in the first place I was able to decide who could care best for them. McKean is pretty quiet. The password is not the same for all borads of a county. When someone gets a board they get a password but if someone else takes the others they get a different password. For a while Penny and I were jointly doing the Venango boards and the surname helper used to sometimes put her name as the site admnistrator. I see she is now listed as the site administrator if you go to the PA and McKean because she has a few of those boards too. http://surhelp-bin.rootsweb.com/sitelist.pl I am the Venango County coordinator but by giving Penny the boards in her name to administer the Genconnect surname system lists her as the site coordinator on that surname page. It is ok, they will know who is the coordinator when they get to Venango. And perhaps it is referring to the boards site coordinator. It has to do with who has the boards, that person is listed as site coordinator and the person who has the most boards is consider the prime adminstrator. It is a computer reading thing. So I am listed and the site administrator for Sligo but Penny is on McKean because she has more of them and Venango because she has them all. She does a good administration job and I appreciate the help.
