Hi Dave, Sorry to hear that you are not going to stay on with the page( which is very good by the way, in my opinion!). We'll certainly miss you in the project. I notice you had sent this to several lists. Please inform anyone who is interested in taking over for you that they will need to contact the IGW Coordinator, Don Kelly to ask to join the project. With our Policies just about up on the net, we will have guidelines and procedures to follow for anyone who wishes to join the project, and anyone potentially interested will need to contact Don and then follow those procedures. Best of luck in your future ... and stay in touch with us! Maura, I remember a discussion one time over displaying the origin (number code) of an email. Rootsweb can track that to the domain and maybe the domain can track to the actual sender. So, a person could lie but they could track it. I forget what the code is called. I think, after much back and forth, it was decided not to publish that with ea msg. Most people were against it. The thought for posting was that it would cut down on spam if they realized their origin could be tracked. Posters don't have to inlude an email address if they don't want to on GC. They could leave it out if they didn't want email such as when posting something they had no further info on. A sensible idea. To report the notorious spammer, or any spammer to GC boards, copy the whole post of the spammer including his/her email address to the GenConnect address below. Please Book Mark this address. Cheers. Don Don- > > If any of the CCs still have the copy of their admin notices for this post > please forward a copy to: st_rays3@hotmail.com > > We are keeping a record. > > Joan
Technically, couldn't anyone put in a fake email address on that part where you enter text on the Query (or any other board page)? I've never tried to "cheat" but it asks for your name and email address.... how does it know it doesn't match the one you are sending from? I don't think it does..... so any spammer or anyone with more than one email address could put anything in there. Like so and so @ mickeymouse.com ... and GC wouldn't recognize the difference. I"m not sure if there would be anything they could do to prevent it. Spammers are getting smarter, now many have figured out that they have to be subbed to lists to post, so they join and send and then unsub. There's a big one going on who uses hotmail for Video Ireland, he keeps hitting SHAMROCK every few months and then changing his email address to get back in. I think the only thing you can do is look at each post made to your board when you get notified. The Waterford Query board is pretty busy and there are times I'm tempted just to delete them and not read them, but I don't... have caught this guy Don was referring to once in the past, and have caught a few others. All this said, it makes having over 300 boards even more absurd, now doesn't it? <g> <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat/instruct.htm
I was just checking out the Scotland GenWeb to see how many boards Dick McCoach has there (I counted 187 out of 238). He is not a county coordination of any of the 33? counties. I also found 7 out of the 34 query boards had invalid links back to their county home page. (maybe IGW should consider having someone monitor such things once in a while - couldn't hurt - haven't checked Ireland yet). That is all beside the point, the reason I am writing this message is that I was going to email the Scotland national co-ordinator (whom I assume is Nate Zipfel) - BUT - when you go to the main Scotland GenWeb site there is no national coordinator listed; instead there is a note as part of the Welcome message to the effect of "There is a small team of individuals responsible for the management of the project." (when you to to that 'team' page, you finally find Nate's name listed as national co-ordinator.) I thought that during our past election problems in the spring, we were told in no uncertain terms by the WGW that the Ireland project was definitely not allowed to have a 'team' in effect, that it must be a 'one man' operation; in fact that any WGW project had to have one head honcho in charge. Mind you there is no team listed for Scotland anyway! If you want a real laugh, check out the 'ScotlandGenWeb Project Help Desk' page where it states the messages must be about projects, not queries - naturally there is nothing there but queries, I like the 'where is Glascow'? one - or check out 'counties' - about the saddest queries I've ever seen anywhere, especially on a page stating queries will be removed; definitely a message board that is not maintained - makes the Scotland project itself seem like a joke! >From the little I have seen of the Scotland GenWeb project there is very little leadership or quality control, I hope I never see Ireland GenWeb deteriorate in this manner - it shows that any project should have some 'weights and controls' in effect. Also note that Nate lists (some) of the adoptable counties for Scotland on the main page - something he refused to do for Ireland when we asked him to reinstate the practice and part of what caused initial flareup and bad feelings in the spring in the first place. All in all, I found my trip to the Scotland project very educational. The reason for this message was that 'team thing' - Nate was so adament about it for Ireland, but lists it on his own project? Thanks Carol: I wasn't sure what to watch for. I guess he just hasn't considered Co. Tipperary as worthy of spamming so far because I've never received any such messages! Mary, This person that Don has mentioned is a notorious spammer and has been posting to GenConnect for over 1 year. He changes his email address and reposts to hundreds of boards. His website has nothing to do with genealogy though he often puts the url title as World Family Tree. Recently, David Samuelson sent a message to the WGW-L mail list warning country coordinators that he was back and spamming our boards again. He apparently hit all the GermanyGenWeb boards. Prior to this he was posting to the Norwegian, Sweden and Finland boards. GenConnect is very aware of this person and they are trying to find a way to keep him from posting. He has never posted to my Ireland boards but did post to the Middle East GenWeb quite a bit. I reported him to his ISP and then he changed to yahoo.com which made it next to impossible to report him. Due to work and family demands, I no longer have the time to maintain the County Roscommon, Ireland website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlrosco This has been a labor of love. I have tried to make it an enjoyable resource, both for genealogy research and for those who just want to know more about the area. I hope that it may find a fine new home. I would like to have someone take over its responsibility. You would be able to change in whatever way you wish, or you may retain its current look. You may also move it to another location, if you wish. There are no expenses involved. The site was originally developed with Microsoft FrontPage, and I will forward you all of the files necessary to continue using FrontPage, if you like. If interested, please email me at roscom48@hotmail.com and I will fill you in. Don: I've never seen the work of one of these spammers that you occasionally warn us about - none has come to the Co. Tip board that I am aware of. There is no message on the 'general' to check as an example of what you are talking about - if you have already deleted his handiwork - perhaps, next time you could leave the posting up long enough for any of us cc's that may not be aware of what we should be watching out for, to get look at what it is you are referring to. Sounds like a daunting task. When these do come from committee, what is the procedure then? Do they automatically get adopted or are they reviewed or discussed in anyway? Since the issue of Policies keeps coming up (and rightly so) as chair of the Policies Committee let me say this.... We (Jack, Vicky and myself) have been working very hard on these issues and questions in order to ensure the safety and success of the IGW Project. It's been a lot to deal with, and in between we also had illnesses, vacations and real life to contend with. I ended up with a two inch thick stack of printed emails of our discussions and decisions to put together into a cohesive page, along the lines of the USGW and CanadaGenWeb policies, which we thought were the most comprehensive and best. Our goal was to have all of it done and up by July 15. However, I have spent almost all my time this past week dealing with the Dick/GC fiasco. This has pushed it back about that length of time. All your concerns are valid and most everything that has been brought up on here has been addressed in Policies. This recent fiasco did bring up some issues where we need to readdress things, mostly because we thought people would know what "unprofessional conduct" was,,,, never thinking something like this would happen. At least now we know that as detailed as we have been, there were some things we needed to readdress and make more clear. Maybe that is the only good thing that can come out of this situation. Anything that we have addressed has been pretty much common sense, and I really doubt anyone is going to have a problem with what we've come up with. As soon as it's up and ready, it will be announced for you all to view. In the mean time, if you have any issues or concerns that you want to make sure are addressed, or are worried about, please write to me privately with them, and I will make sure it gets to Jack and Vicky also. Writing policies for this project turned out to be more than I expected it to be. I thought it could be done in a month or two, and I guess it could have been. But we are taking care with each word, and again, I think you will all be pleased with the end result. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/signup/change.html This is the GC page where you can reconfigure your present GC query page, change your address, change links, change your password, etc. After the code provided, just add the last two words of your GC page URL In my case, that would be Ireland/General for the front page or Ireland/Leitrim for my County page. Enter your password and click and your page comes up. Down at the bottom is the square to click on to update the Surname Helper page. Just check it and click change and it's done automatically. You may have to check Surname Helper index often to make sure someone hasn't changed your name as coordinator contact back to their name. Good luck The NC
Hi guys: One of the things I learned at the GenConnect support board yesterday - to get to the GC (GenConnect) edit or 'change' page quickly, just click on 'change password' (below your password and options boxes while you're in your county ?admin pages). You then enter the entire url path for the board that you want to update (if you have all 7 boards for your county, you have to update each board separately). (Dumb me I always thought that it was for changing your password, duh! - but it is instead your entry to the entire 'change' function which link you have to look around for on the GenConnect site itself.) http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/signup/change.html Please bookmark this site because here you can edit basic content of any GC page you have the password for. It's good for changes of addresses, names, URLs, links, etc., etc. Real helpful Down at the bottom is the square that you click on to automatically update the attached Surname helper index page. When you update, your name appears on the Surname Index page as administrator/contact for your county. We have had a lot of recent trouble with others claiming to administrate pages in your county. Until we can get this mess straightened out, this is the best we can do. Good night The NC
Hi gang. I just finished checking all GC query boards assigned on the index page to CCs of all Ireland Counties. I have corrected and updated those query pages which I manage, even those for the unhosted counties sites which I temporarily host. Please visit your GC editing page and click on the square where it says something like, "update your Surname Helper page". That will put your name back on the master Surname Helper list as coordinator for your county. Then check the Surname index page often to make sure that someone has not put in their name instead of yours. We are working to get this loophole closed to unauthorized intruders. Thanks for your cooperation. Don
