    3. Hi all, I wanted to let you all know that I met personally yesterday with Charles Merrin (General Manager of Rootsweb) and Andre Brummer (General Manager of MyFamily.com/Ancestry.com). They came to visit me because of my position as the Chairperson of the WorldGenWeb Project Advisory Board. I know there has been alot of discussion and concern in various places about the future of your websites (if you host on Rootsweb). They asked me to relay that your website is your website and Rootsweb will not be forcing banners, etc... onto your website. They will not lay claim to your data. 3. i feel setting a up a template is redundant. Each county already has a template in place and on-line. Duplication of working IMO is a waste of time. I consider all of our time valuable don't like to waste it. As I am contacted by each new CC I walk them thru the process of what to do tell them what links they need to have and what can and can't be on their pages. While I am on this subject - since i am working off my laptop and have been since June. would the new CC's who I have not contacted PLEASE email me. I thankyou for your suggestion - hope you don't mind if I decide not touse it barbl On Sat, 29 Jul 2000 00:38:14 -0500 (CDT) mpetzolt2@webtv.net (Maura) writes: > I believe setting up a template and helping new hosts organize their > counties is the function of the Welcome Host/Hostess. > > It's a good idea, but that is under her jurisdiction so to speak. > Not > that we can't suggest ideas to each other...... > > <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> > Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net > <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> > SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage > http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS > > Helpful Hints for Successful Searching > http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat/instruct.htm > > > ==== IGW Mailing List ==== > National Coordinator > ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 3. Well seeing as we have been operating the IGW without its own policies in effect to date, that type of subject can probably be addressed once the project is covered by some sort of policy guidelines. As it stands, everything dealing with the project is sort of unofficial or haphazard in a way? 3. That separate query page is a great idea! (which brings up something I have been thinking about since I first joined the IGW way back when - wouldn't it be great if we had some sort of 'template' of pages or ideas to make things easier for new (and old) volunteers.) It could also address the problem with surname researchers that seem think that a query board is the same as an email list and just bounce messages back and forth (Ryan is my biggest surname headache) that do not necessarily have anything to do with Co. Tipperary at all - it doesn't matter how many messages you send them, the same people keep posting the same types of messages. I think that any instructions that you want to post on the boards, you have to include within the area that they let you put up your links and counters - the other 'messages' differ from board to board, it almost appears depending on how they are feeling at GC that day. The counter works great by the way, I input one on my Co. Tip query page at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/Ireland/Tipperary and it shows that there have been more than 400 visitors to the board since I installed it some time last week. 3. I had thought there was some discussion amongst GC staff to allow us to have "boxes" on each board to post instructions etc.. to avoid getting those "searching for info" headlines. I don't know the status of it, as I am not on the GC mailing list. It would be helpful, but of course if they don't read the directions nothing is going to help anyway. I've linked all the query boards for Wateford off a page with instructions hoping that will cut down on those things... for an example go to http://community.webtv.net/waterfordroots/waterford and click on Message boards for Waterford for how I did it. I also listed all the boards for Waterford I could find on the web... there were several. I think the more our users have access to the better. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat/instruct.htm

    3. Thanks Maura: Jean didn't respond to my request that she stop posting her land records to the Co. Tip query board. That was why I was so pleased when this whole GenConnect board thing broke (is it only a couple of weeks now?) and I realized the potential of the 'extra' boards. I took the time, went through the query board and moved all 23 messages to the deeds board. It took me hours to do it! Now the query board is cleared up and the the real bonus, I feel, is that when you go to the 'surname helper' link on the query board and input a name, the alpha list comes up indicating which board the message is on - therefore you know before clicking on a link, whether you will be going to a genuine query or to a land record type of posting (it did take a week for the surname index to update though). Actually, I cleaned up the query board and my surname list also, things are looking great for the first time in a long time I feel like there is some actual maintenance that can be done on the boards to make them more efficient - now if only folks would stop posting queries with headings like 'my family', 'my research' etc, don't they realize the potential effectiveness of lising their names, time period and location?) 3. Mary, Until recently there -weren't - individual county deed boards. When Jean Rice kept posing these records to query boards I asked GC to intervene with her (this was in the spring of 1999) , and they decided to create the General Ireland Deeds board for her to put them on for -all- counties. Whether or not she did for all counties I don't know, tho I do know she stopped posting them to my Waterford Query board. I can't answer the other part of your email, but wanted to clear that up about which board was created for her to do this originally. These postings, as any off topic posting, shouldn't be on any query board anyway. 3. Don: Why would the land records entries go to the 'main Ireland General land records page' instead of the individual 'deeds' boards? Or should Jean Rice be duplicating all of her entires to both boards? (general and county). Was that not the purpose of having individual county boards? Why would GC be requesting such a duplication? Could you give us an idea of the actual wording of the GC request. Just wondering. Mary Co. 2. Maura
    3. Don, There is a General Ireland GC board for Deeds, which you have listed as a Land Records board on the main page. There is no "General Ireland Land Records" GC board. Maybe its a technical point, but if it's called two different things, it's going to cause confusion. We hosts might know what you are referring to, but the IGW main page visitor off the cyber-street may not. If it's called the Deeds board, it should be listed as the Deeds board. Deeds and Land Records are not exactly the same thing. That GC General Ireland Deeds board was the one GC originally set up so Jean Rice's posts could all go there and not on individual pages. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlwat/instruct.htm

    3. Hi gang THIS IS AN OFFICIAL REQUEST We have a cooperative effort with GC to rescue land or deed information from GC query pages. Please check your query pages beginning January 1999 to date. Copy any queries that include land records, ownership, stewardship, any form of land occupation record and paste them to the main Ireland General land records page. That land record holds information for all counties in Ireland, including Northern Ireland. Find the link to the GC land records page on the IrelandGenWeb index page, upper left. Thanks all for your cooperation. Let me know if you have any trouble. Donald O'Collaugh Kelly National Coordinator The IrelandGenWeb Project
