I followed Maura's suggestion and emailed Nancy Trice about the boards. They were sent to me this evening. Just a few hours after my request. Just wanted to let everyone know that this appears to be the best method for requesting them. Regards, Christina Co. Longford
FYI.... I checked the Waterford boards which I am trying to adopt, and while some have nothing but that system admin notice, those that do have 2 or 3 posts are all but 1 off topic, general queries listed on Bible records etc etc,.... and I see that Jean Rice is once again posting her off topic exerpts from books which she doesn't cite to various boards.. this time to Bios boards evidently as they mention surnames but are history of cities in certain counties. Guess I know what I will be doing as soon as (hopefully) I get the admin of these boards. Guess Dick didn't bother to check those 300+ boards as to whether or not the posts were correct :) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints
Nancy Trice contacted me about another GC matter (not related to the IGW project) and on the advice of one other IGW host, I then wrote to Nancy and forwarded my two emails previously written to her about not being answered on my Waterford adoptions. Since the situation with GC is kind of precarious, I don't feel comfortable forwarding the email to an archived list, but basically Nancy said "GenConnect has recently undergone some changes in responsibilities etc. If this is an international board it is me that would handle the transfer... we don't have a form to handle international and special board transfers. I'll need the URL for the board(s) you are talking about and will attempt to get it squared away asap for you". So I guess we need to write to her at trice@vci.net with the urls of the boards. I'll withhold my thoughts on "changes in responsibilities" (tho I admit I'm curious as to what that means) and why a large organization with so many international boards doesn't have a system set up to deal with international situations. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_011B_01C02D22.CE73AFC0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi Maura, Mary, Mary, Carol, Vicki and all who have written about the availability of boards for your counties. I heard from Vicki that she got the suite of boards for Cork, and we got back the Dublin query board that was taken from us, plus the companion suite that went with it. But I have heard from no one else who has had their request answered. If I didn't know better, I would think that Nancy has extended her clear discrimination against me to some other CCs in Ireland. Not a good way to treat people who maintained GenConnect query boards for years. The pages I applied for are all companion pages, Bio, Bibl, Wills, to GenConnect query pages I already had for some time. I never asked for any new boards, and I never asked for any boards adminned by others, except those labeled as orphans or adopts, both of which are normally adaptable.. The only answer I received was a not very nice letter from Megan which I attach. It seems that Rootsweb and Gen Connect apparently do not see us as the victims in this matter. The letter attached, with my shocked response, is untrue of course, but it does reflect a biased view of the facts by Rootsweb. I hope that Megan will hear from many members of this list who know the facts as they happened. The facts are that Ireland CCs are being discriminated against when it comes to issuing boards, while Nancy can give 300 boards to one person without a second thought. I'm not writing to Nancy anymore because I am very sick of having my complaints and words twisted. I did nothing that Megan said I did, and she has not responded to my answer. Could it be that she doesn't want to hear the truth. That is scary. Thanks all. I think we may get all or most of the boards we asked for, but it will take a little time to actually get them. I have never tried to remove a board from another admin. The closest I came to that was asking that a list be returned to a county from which the prior CC took it. That was my meaning when I said we all as CC agree to turn in the keys when we leave a county. And the board I asked to be returned wasn't even mine, it was for a CC. 2. The boards I have applied for lately are all adminned by the orphan manager or the adopt manager. My understanding is that we can ask for those boards if we want them and will maintain them. Many/Most/All of those boards are companions to boards I already have. In conclusion, the facts are I have tried to take boards from no one. I have asked the admin for a couple of them because it simply made good sense, but when they said No, I dropped it. I have demanded nothing. Those are the facts. I think you have known my long enough to know I would not do that, and I am hurt that you suggest I would. Whomever said that about me is a liar, pure and simple. I apply for boards the same as anyone else does, and if I say something, it because it is true. If I take action in behalf of a CC, it's my job. I would be more than happy to answer specific charges from specific people. I am dedicated to genealogy, rootsweb, USGW and WGW and GenConnect. These groundless charges hurt me very much. If you are talking about illegal actions committed against me....or you, we have legal rights to defend ourselves. I'm sure you would not condone illegal acts. Please tell me specifically what I have done and I'll explain every incident. You've been spending a lot of time lately making charges and allegations to and about other admins, and going from one staff member to another trying to get various boards taken away from other admins and given to you. You have been told repeatedly by various staff members that you have no *entitlement* to lists and boards because of your affiliation with WorldGenWeb. That should be sufficient to end the discussion and keep things on an even keel, I think. I haven't heard back yet either! Their 'adoption' page does not cover 'international' boards apparently so I had sent my request to the email address that appears at the bottom of each board up for adoption (gc-adopt@rootsweb.com). No, I haven't even been able to get to the site to request my boards. Vicki County Wicklow
Has anyone gotten the abandoned boards for their county? I see, Tom Cleary is doing it. Very nice. Sheila
I was unaware of this page and it belonging to IGW. Who is the webmaster for it? http://www.cmcrp.net/ Should we link to it? Sheila
http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/request/international.html Hi gang. This is the URL to the Rootsweb page where you apply for the newly available board suite ( cluster pages ) bios, wills, land, etc., companions for your existing query and surname boards. These boards have not been indexed to the adoption section of the Rootsweb boards administration lists, so applying for the boards the normal way will return a message like, "this is an existing issued board" or some message like that. Until indexing is completed, the only other thing you can do is to get your dibs in on the boards before someone else adopts them. To do that, open your GenConnect query board. In the browser window at the top add will to the end of your county name.....( like Ireland/LeitrimWill )...and hit enter. That will pop up the Wills companion page to your Query board. Go to the bottom of that page and find the email address of the adopt or orphan pages manager/administrator. Send an email to her to let her know that you are interested in adopting the companion boards to your query board. There are six companion boards. They will take a little time getting back to you, but you will then have instructions for the next step to adopting the pages you need. Please don't let this opportunity pass. It has taken us four months to get this opportunity to control our own boards and manage our own pages without someone else claiming credit for your work. I strongly urge every CC in Ireland to make every effort to adopt those boards. We know that some of the boards have little value to us in Ireland, ( records were all burned, etc. )but it is too risky to allow an outsider with no genealogical interest in Ireland to manage those boards. I hope we have learned our lessons well enough to protect our copyrights. I know I have. Any questions? Please ask. Donald O'Collaugh Kelly National Coordinator The IrelandGenWeb Project
Carol, Yes, I tried the regular adopt form, but it will not work for existing boards. I too have emailed gc-adopt regarding the suites of boards for my counties. Fingers crossed! I had hoped that Dick had returned all the boards he made for Scotland and England as well -- but it appears he has only given up the Ireland boards. BTW - there is no form to request international boards that already exist. I emailed the gc-orphans email at the bottom of the board. Hi all, For County Coordinators who have not heard the news, It appears that Dick McCouch has quietly turned in his Ireland County Boards to GenConnect and has stopped claiming that he admins our County pages. That is real good news. Curiously enough, GenConnect has taken over the Surname Helper boards and now claims that they administrate your county pages.<grin>That's the bad news, BUT Please, so this does not happen again, go to the rootsweb orphan/adopt boards page and adopt the boards for your county before any else does. Your name will then replace GenConnect as manager of your county pages. When all Ireland CCs control their own county pages, then I can stop arguing every week for four months with poor Nancy. I am sure she is really tired of arguing with me.<grin> Cheers, and please pass the word. Looks like we can move forward again. Thanks for your support during this trying time. Don with the IGW NC hat on.

I would like to be sure of the proper way to call the projects. I am calling the site I host Co. Longford Ireland GenWeb Project. Is that right? Is there a proper title format? And Ireland is - Ireland GenWeb Project? Should our copyright say IrelandGenWeb Project or Co Longford GenWeb Project? Thanks, Christina
Be alerted that Robert the spammer just hit the Ireland General query board again today. Don
I just visited this person's site. Just what the net needs...another person maintaining a set of Irish links. This person has no original content. Thank you Sheila, There is an enormous growing interest in Ireland genealogy and this interest will continue to be defined by more and more websites dedicated to Irish interests. While it is a policy of IGW to link to other sources of genealogical interest, as CCs we have the option to decide for ourselves which sites are good or bad for our counties or for The IrelandGenWeb Project. This new site seems to have nice web appeal, but duplicates to great extent our own efforts. It also appears that the author(s) are/is not proud of their surname(s) because I found no personal email contact anywhere on the site. One caution I have is that if any of you find that this new site has used your copyrighted material, please report it to me or our board for further action. At the least, we can file an official complaint with the ISP of the offending users. Same is true of another relatively new Ireland website found at the bottom of the Ireland-L mailing list, a complete set of county pages linked to a home page, but no national name. I expect that many surfers will mistake the Ireland-L list for The IrelandGenWeb Project mailing list, to duplicate to some degree our efforts and also erode our subscriber base. We just need to advantage what we can, do our own thing, and try to ignore the rest.
