A Meeting at Which Important Matters Were Discussed. The Town Council met in regular cession Wednesday evening. There were present Messrs. Pence, Richards and Platt. Wm. Lauer, the Front street hardware man, presented a written request for a street crossing at or near his place of business. The matter was referred to the Street Committee with the recommendation that immediate action be taken. W. F. Eberle appeared before the Council with a petition bearing the names of many citizens, praying the Council to take steps towards providing the town with some sort of apparatus as a protection against fire. The petition was discussed at some length by members of the Council, and while the general sentiment seemed to be that the town should have a well equipped volunteer fire department, the fact stared the town daddies square in the face that the municipal exchequer is not in a very robust condition just now, and that it would be better enlist the business men in the project and accomplish the desired end by private subscriptions, than for the Council to saddle an additional indebtedness on the town. The petition was referred to the proper committee. Reports of officers were read and referred. Some small bills were allowed and others referred to the Finance Committee.

Old Postmaster’s Resignation Sent in Several Weeks Ago—Effort Made to Secure the Place for Another—Matter Taken Up by Mr. French. Everybody in this section of the state will be glad to hear that Burt Venable, editor of the Payette Independent, has been named for postmaster of that place. Mr. Venable deserves such recognition and his is splendidly qualified to discharge the duties of the position. He is one with whom it will be a pleasure for the public to do business. It seems that George P. Johnson, the outgoing postmaster, sent in his resignation about the first of the year. He informed A. B. Moss and the latter set about to secure the appointment of Clifford L. Dagg. Mr. Moss took the matter up with Judge Standrod, national committeeman, and made such representations to him that the judge sent in a recommendation for the appointment of Mr. Dagg. This was all done so secretly that the public did not know the postmaster had resigned until Chairman D. D. Campbell of the Republican county committee was notified by Representative Burton L. French that the matter of the resignation of Johnson and recommendation of Dagg had been referred to him. The effect of this letter from the congressman was to start the party forces of the county to work for Mr. Venable, with the result that the latter has been appointed.

Church Was Being Used as School Room—Pupils File Out in Good Order When Fire Starts—Loss Will Reach Two Thousand Dollars. Payette, Feb. 13.—(Special)—Fire broke out in the old Baptist Church here about 10:30 this morning, burning that structure and the 2-story frame building next door to the ground. Mrs. H. B. Smith has been running a primary school in the old church and there were 40 or 45 pupils present at the time the fire broke out. The teacher quietly told them they were excused for the morning, and they filed out in good order, none of them being injured. The fire, which is suppose to have started from the chimney of the church building, rapidly spread over the intervening space of about 10 feet to a 2-story building owned by Howard Sebree of Caldwell and occupied by J. B. Burns. A portion of the furniture of Mr. Burns was removed from the building. Mr. Burns had insured the contents of the building only yesterday for $600, but this was the only insurance on any of the property destroyed by the fire, so far as is known. The total loss will amount to about $2000.
