What appears to be a remarkable case came under the treatment of Dr. Alfred Skippen last Sunday morning. Charley Decker, the six-year-old son of Jake Decker, has been suffering for a long time with a chronic affection of the ear, which at times resulted in a mattery discharge. On Sunday morning the little fellow was almost wild with his ear and his father took him to Dr. Skippen’s office for treatment. Upon examination the doctor discovered and removed a couple of grubs or maggots, since which time eight more have been removed. The ear-drum has been destroyed by the disease and the maggots appear to have eaten away the small muscles attached to the little bones of the ear, and would very soon have worked their way through into the brain. Dr. Skippen thinks the maggots are the result of a fly which deposited its eggs while the child slept. We publish the facts connected with this case for the reason that there have been all kinds of stories in circulation. We have before us at this time an account of a similar case, published in the Hood River Glacier, which came to the notice of Dr. Shaw at The Dalles, Ore. The doctor examined the ear of a 12-year-old boy who was suffering intense agony and with delicate forceps extracted a maggot. He then blew in some vapor of chloroform and pulled out five more maggots nearly an inch in length. The boy had remembered of a big fly striking him in the ear only a few days before the pain commenced.

A special to the Boise Statesman, from Durkee, Ore., says: A tragedy that ended the lives of a resident of Caldwell and a 16-year-old girl, also of that place, whom he had enticed away from home, was enacted here today. The man was A. A. Earl and the girl Blossom Small. With pursuing officers within earshot of the reports of his revolver, he sent a bullet crashing through the brain of the girl and then turned the weapon upon himself. The bodies are now here awaiting the arrival of the coroner. Sheriff Watkins of Canyon county tells the story of the murder and suicide as follows: “Monday, as charged, Earl, who is a married man, having a wife and two children in Caldwell, ran away with the Small girl, who was an orphan living with some relatives for whom Earl was working. Tuesday a warrant charging him with rape was placed in my hands. I learned he had gone to Huntington. When I arrived there I ascertained the Earl and the girl had left on foot up Burnt river. Today with an officer from Huntington I started up the river after them. About 20 miles above Huntington we passed them. They were evidently concealed in the brush and we did not see them nor did they see us, I judge. Had they seen and recognized us as officers they might have hidden themselves away until after nightfall, when they could have proceeded with the danger of being apprehended minimized. “After we found that we were ahead of them we turned back. They saw us coming and Earl evidently recognized me. He started off with the girl and we saw them running. We tracked them for 5 or 10 minutes when we heard two shots. “Proceeding a little further we found both of them in a dying condition. Earl had shot the girl in the left temple, the bullet passing through her head. He then fired a bullet into his right temple. We had to bodies brought to Durkee and the coroner of this county was notified.”

The Gem State Rural reports that S. A. Moulton reported the total shipment of prunes from Payette this year at six carloads.—Oregon Agriculturist. We can’t understand how such an item as the aboe was ever permitted to appear in the Gem State Rural. The editor of the Rural is secretary of the state horticultural board, and he ought to have known better than to make such a statement on the authority of anybody. If our memory serves us right the records at the depot will show that 26 carloads of prunes were shipped from the Payette station in 1899.

There seems to have been some delay in summoning a physician. Dr. Skippen of this city reached the case Friday evening, when he fixed Mr. Koelkenbeck up so that he could be brought to Payette.
