A. Coughanour, on Monday afternoon by Mr. Coughanour, who went there to look over the property. The body which was poorly dressed, was found lying on a pile of straw beside a dilapidated suitcase which contained a knife, fork and spoon, also some writing material. Coroner I. H. Adair, Sheriff J. C. Stewart and Dr. J. C. Woodward, county physician was called and a thorough examination was made which revealed but little evidence as to the identity of the man. It is believed that he had been dead for several days. On a scrap of paper in the suitcase was written, C. E. Scott, Portland, Ore. The Portland authorities have been notified and the body is being held at the Peterson parlors pending information from Portland. It is believed, however, the man is a "drifter" and probably will not be identified.

About 3 o'clock Monday afternoon, November 25, the dead body of a man was found in a vacant house, belonging to W. A. Coughanour, one block west of the O. S. L. depot, by Fred Frickle, living in a house about 200 feet south. County Coroner, I. H. Adair, and Sheriff Stewart were notified and investigation showed that the man died of natural causes as he was lying on a straw bed with an old quilt over him. The man was about 60 years old, height 5 feet 9 inches, weight 160 pounds, red brown hair, bald in front, blue eyes, sandy complexion, beard mixed with gray, three teeth missing and others badly decayed, large scar on pit of stomach, evidently from a burn. There was also an envelope of the Big Four Transfer Co. of Portland. S. C. McGee at the Commercial Hotel says he met the man at La Grande about three months ago and that he had been around Payette for three weeks. Mr. McGee said he was without funds and told him he had no relatives. O. W. Hull, night man, said he had also seen the man around for about three weeks. Efforts to locate friends or relatives have so far failed.

Surnames: Cortner, Lowery Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5d.2ADI/3598 Message Board Post: Payette Enterprise Payette, Idaho Thursday, November 7, 1929 OBITUARY OF H. J. CORTNER Henry Joseph Cortner was born May 3, 1854, near Farmland, Ind. He was next to the youngest of a large family, all of whom have passed on except two brothers, Rev. J. R. four years older and Levi two years younger, both residing in Indiana. Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. They were of a sturdy pioneer stock that hewed their way through the forests and helped to build the great commonwealths of Indiana and Minneapolis. Mr. Cortner's first marriage was of a few short years, having one son that lived a short time. His second marriage was blessed with six children, three daughters dying in infancy. A son Mearl M. lives in Detroit, a son LaVern in Blackfoot and a daughter Mrs. C. R. Lowery resides near Boise. There are seven grandsons and two granddaughters who with his bereaved companion and many other relatives and friends will miss him for his was a strong character for righteousness and he was beloved by all. He was a high-school professor until about thirty years of age, when because of failing health he changed from the damp climate of Indiana to that of Minnesota. He purchased one of the most fertile farms in the big woods of the Mississippi valley, 125 miles northwest of Minneapolis. By continued hard work in the 18 years residing there he cleared 100 acres of heavy oak, iron and basswood land so that a binder could be used over the land. After residing there 18 years his health again failed and another change of climate was sought. That section of Idaho known as "God's Country" was the place selected. For 15 years he lived on a farm near Payette. He liked his new home in the farther west and seemed to have obtained a new lease on life. In 1917 he sold his farm and purchased property in the Boise and Hagerman valleys, having made his home in the latter place the greater part of the time since. His health seemed to be even better in Hagerman valley, with its health filled spring water and drier climate. He often said he was willing to spend the remainder of his life here, which he did. After completing a full day's labor, at the dawn of the first day of October, without even a struggle he quietly slipped away to join the throng he so much loved to sing and talk about. The slumber was peaceful and the waking must have been happy. Those who knew him are familiar with his strong convictions for right thi! ngs. He became a Christian early in life and always maintained his strong faith in God and the work of the kingdom. He, with his family were member so the Christian church, but for convenience united with any Evangelical church that might be near, having been members of the Congregational and Presbyterian churches. He was ordained an elder of the Presbyterian church of Payette in 1905, and had been teacher of the Methodist Bible class most of the time since he came to the Hagerman valley. His greatest delight was in Christian service. He was the oldest person actively engaged in farming in Hagerman valley, farming the 40 acre farm where he lived at the time of his death. Mr. Cortner was buried in Morris Hill cemetery, Boise, after funeral services by Rev. Crosby Ross, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, where Mr. Cortner held his church membership. Services were also held at home at Hagerman by Rev. Earl Officer, pastor of the M. E. church where Mr. Cortner worshiped and taught the adult Bible class almost all the time since going to Hagerman. -- Gooding Leader.

    1. Lizzie Mason Underwood obit 1940
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Whitman, Mason, Lane, Marks, Eastman Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5d.2ADI/3585 Message Board Post: Independent Enterprise Payette, Idaho Thursday, February 22, 1940 PIONEER PATRON PASSES MONDAY Mrs. Lizzie Underwood Dies In This City; Funeral Wednesday Mrs. Lizzie Mason Underwood, Idaho pioneer, died here late Monday. She was born in Como, Ill., July 12, 1856, spent her early life in Como and Sterling, Ill., where she married John L. Underwood on February 12, 1876. They moved to Idaho, first to Paris and later to Soda Spring and Montpelier. Mrs. Underwood and her husband were pioneer settlers of eastern Idaho in a true sense of the word, having come to Soda Springs from Evanston, Wyoming, the western terminus of the railroad with a team of horses and a buckboard. The early years of her married life were saddened by the death of her first children, two little boys, who died of diphtheria within a week of each other. The Underwoods moved from Soda Springs to Montpelier where Mr. Underwood was postmaster for fifteen years and deceased acted as his assistant. It was here that Mrs. Underwood began her amazingly active life of working for the community in which she happened to live. She was one of the early founders of the Presbyterian church in Montpelier. She helped the choir, played the organ and taught a Sunday school class. She was a charter member of the Civic club, Maccabees and the Rebekahs of that town. After the death of Mr. Underwood on February 14, 1914, Mrs. Underwood lived in Salt Lake with her daughter, Mrs. Geo. Marks, until she came to Payette in 1918 to make her home until death, with her daughter, Mrs. Bernard Eastman. Mrs. Underwood was an active member of the Portia club, taking part in a program of last November, 1939. She was also very active in D. A. R. work, becoming first a member of the Spirit of Liberty chapter in Salt Lake and was later a charter member of Dorion chapter of this city. Mrs. Underwood had been historian and press correspondent since the chapter’s organization, and kept her records and papers with meticulous care. Mrs. Underwood had many distinguished ancestors one of whom was Col. William Turner who had been active in forming the first law-making bodies of the Thirteen Original States. She was also a kinswoman of Dr. Marcus Whitman, the well known pioneer missionary doctor who has been credited with saving the Oregon Territory for the United States. Mrs. Underwood was to have been an honored guest at the forthcoming annual state conference of the D. A. R. to be held in Payette March 15 and 16 of this year. To pay just tribute to this fine honorable woman who was above the pettiness of life, and who undoubtedly had a great influence wherever she lived, seems impossible, and one can only say that the world is better for her having lived and that it is a privilege to have known her. Three of her four children preceded her in death. Two sons, Phillip and Frank, died in infancy, and a daughter, Mrs. Esther Marks, died at her home in Los Angeles in 1936. Survivors besides Mrs. Eastman, are three grandsons, Boyd Marks and Phillip Eastman, of Los Angeles, and Bernard Eastman, Jr., Nyssa, Ore., and one great-grandson, Michael Geoffrey Eastman, of Nyssa. Other survivors are two brothers, Henry B. Whitman, of Montpelier, Edwin D. Whitman of Soda Springs, and a sister, Mrs. Carrie B. Lane of Houston, Texas. Funeral services were held at the Payette Methodist church Wednesday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. E. R. Kaemmer officiating and Landon’s funeral home in charge. The body was then sent to Soda Springs for burial.
