A letter from Lardo dated Sept. 3d, says there is some excitement there, caused by settlers of Long Valley trying to drive the sheep men out of the country. Nine of the “natives” waited on a herder who is in charge of the sheep of Mr. Butterfield, of Weiser, on the night of the 2d and gave him 24 hours to leave the valley, but on account of his being alone and without horses, they prolonged the time to two days. The letter indicates that subsequent proceedings were liable to be of a very interesting character.

R. Bolton since he was 18 months old, was kidnapped Monday morning while on his way to school. It is alleged the mother of the child, who is separated from the childs father and now living with another man, took the child. It is also alleged the mother has no home, but is moving from place to place. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of the mother, but since the grandparents have no papers to show their authority for holding the child there is some doubt as to the recovery of the missing boy.

Surnames: McVeaty, Haines, Hunt Classification: Marriage Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5d.2ADI/3620 Message Board Post: Payette Independent Payette, Idaho Thursday, February 16, 1899 McVeaty-Haines. The home of Mr. and Mrs. C. Q. Haines, six miles south of Payette, was the scene of a happy wedding last Sunday afternoon, at which time their eldest daughter, Margaret and W. J. A. McVeaty of Boise, were joined in the bonds of holy matrimony by Rev. A. G. Hunt, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Payette. Only the relatives and a few friends of the contracting parties were present. After partaking of a delightful wedding dinner the bride and groom, accompanied by some of their friends, drove to Payette where Mr. and Mrs. McVeaty took the train for Boise which is to be their home. They were attended by a jolly crowd at the station who gave them a royal send-off with a perfect shower of rice, old slippers and good-wishes as the train bore them away on the beginning of life’s new journey. Mr. McVeaty is one of the most popular members of the Statesman’s “art preservative” force, and while it is not easy to overlook the fact that he has robbed a Payette Valley home of one of its richest treasures, we extend congratulations and wish the bride and groom long years of true happiness.

A St. Paul, Minn., dispatch of the 21st says: The homeseekers’ half-fare rate on the trans-continental lines went into effect today. The Northern Pacific and the Great Northern were compelled to double their facilities in order to handle the crowd. Not less than 5000 people took advantage of low rates and the Great Northern sent out an extra train at noon while the Northern Pacific was compelled to add a second section to its through trains. The railroad officials report that many of the travelers bought only one way tickets, which is taken as an indication of an intention to locate permanently in the west.

The Wilson boy, who was first to find the body, notified Constable J. B. Cosman, who in turn notified Drs. Woodward and Woodward, accompanied by Judge R. L. Shaw, the party proceeded to the Payette river, back of the ball park, where about 100 curious people were waiting. A boat which had already arrived, conveyed Glenn Landon, Dr. J. C. Woodward, and the Wilson boy to the island, where the body of a baby girl, dressed, but in a bad state of decomposition, was found. It was estimated that the child was about five months old, and had been exposed to the sun for probably four weeks. The remains were taken to Lauer's undertaking parlors, and Coroner Robinson of Nampa was notified. Mr. Robinson came down Saturday and made an investigation; and soon after ordered the burial of the body. Up to the time we go to press, no clue to the identity of the child has been found.

Mr. Darnell who had been employed for the past ten years as ditch rider for the company, was engaged with other men in constructing a concrete tap near the Creasey ranch south of New Plymouth. They had set fire to some weeds along the ditch the night previous and left, believing the fire was out, however, during the night the fire burned down one of the poles to the high power line that follows the ditch bank, which fell, carrying the live wires to the ground. When Nick Vandenberger, one of the helpers arrived Monday morning he found Mr. Darnell's body where he had evidently been instantly killed. According to information received, he left town about seven o'clock and from all indications, with a bucket still in his hands and tracks leading from a barrel of water to the burning pole, he had endeavored to extinguish the fire and approached too near the high power wire. His body was brought to the Peterson Undertaking Parlor at Payette and the funeral was held from the New Plymouth Congregational church, Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Darnell was 66 years of age and one of the most highly respected citizens in Payette county and leaves many close friends who were shocked and grieved at his tragic death. He is survived by a wife and four children. The children are Mrs. Dan Langletz, Roy and Glenn Darnell, all of New Plymouth, and Rose Darnell who lives in British Columbia.

He was burning trash along the ditch and when an electric power line pole caught fire he went to the ditch and brought a bucket of water with which to extinguish the flames. In throwing the water against the pole contact was formed, as water is a conductor, and the current passed through his body killing him instantly. The hand which held the water bucket and one of his heels, in which there were heavy nails, were burned, showing that the current passed through the body from the hand to the foot. His helper was near by and saw the accident and his body fall, but when he reached the unfortunate man life was extinct. Mr. Darnell had been a ditch rider on this irrigation system which carries water past New Plymouth to Fruitland and was a faithful worker and a good, clean citizen. The suddenness of his death was a great shock to everybody as he was well known and highly respected.

Surnames: Grischkowsky, Wilson, Stockton, Carpenter Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5d.2ADI/763.1 Message Board Post: Independent Enterprise Payette, Idaho Thursday, August 27, 1953 Highway Crash Fatally Injures Fruitland Man Pete Grischkowsky Dies As Result Of Two Car Collision At Road Intersection No inquest will be held to investigate the Monday afternoon highway collision which claimed the life of Peter M. Grischkowsky, Payette county's first traffic fatality of 1953, Gifford Shaffer, coroner, said today. Grischkowsky, 74, died in the Ontario hospital yesterday morning from severe injuries suffered in the two car accident. He had been a long-time resident of Fruitland, moving into the district in 1909 from his native Russia. The fatal collision ended a perfect highway string of 283 deathless days on county roads, Sheriff Ray Stephens pointed out. His office stated that the last fatality here was Daniel Schrock, Boise resident who was killed November 14. Second Monday Accident The fatal accident was the second collision within a five minute period Monday afternoon, according to E. C. Marty, sheriff's deputy. Grischkowsky's automobile was hit broadside by another vehicle driven by Burt Crowther, a Payette well driller, as the two vehicles entered the intersection of two county roads one mile south and a mile east of Fruitland, the officer's report stated. Both men were alone in their cars, Marty said. Crowther estimated his speed at the time of the accident at 40 miles per hour. He had been driving south on Elmore avenue. Grischkowsky was driving east on an intersecting road. He was rushed to the Holy Rosary hospital with chest injuries. Crowther did not require hospitalization. After investigating the circumstances of the accident, Coroner Shaffer decided against holding an official inquest. No charges have been placed by investigating officers. Earlier Wreck Reported Five minutes earlier, at 1:45 Monday afternoon, a truck driven by George Flack of New Plymouth, collided with a pickup driven by Earl Taylor of New Plymouth. Flack was driving west on a county road and Taylor's vehicle was moving south when they met at an intersection one mile southwest of New Plymouth. After the collision, Flack's truck skidded 80 feet and flipped over. Taylor and his wife, a passenger in his pickup, were taken to New Plymouth and received emergency treatment for rib injuries. No citations were issued. Survivors Named The victim of the fatal accident, Peter Martin Grischkowsky, is survived by his widow, Eva of Fruitland; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Helen Stockton and Mrs. Florence Carpenter, both of New Plymouth; a stepson, Vernon Wilson of Fruitland; seven grandchildren, eight nieces and eleven nephews. He was born March 10, 1879 in the Russian Crimea and had been a member of the Lutheran church. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon at the Emmanuel Lutheran church in New Plymouth with the Rev. Theo Brackman officiating. Interment follows at the Park View cemetery in New Plymouth under the direction of the Shaffer Memory chapel.
