Mr. Ovens was born in New Jersey about 65 years ago -- the exact date is not known, as he had no relatives in this city. He came to Payette eight years ago. He was an active member of the Commercial club until his health failed him and was always one of the substantial workers and boosters for the valley. His health incapacitated him for active labor, yet he had a keen mind and was optimistic till the last. A few days before he died, the reporter of the Independent called on him at his apartments and found him reclining comfortably in an easy chair. He spoke enthusiastically of the valley, the outlook for a heavy crop and of his plans for taking care of it. He remained steadfast to the last and died like a man. Short Masonic services were held at the hall Sunday afternoon, and the body was started on its long journey to Albany, New York where his relatives requested it sent for burial.

His death occurred March 13, 1911. He leaves a father, mother and two sisters to mourn his departure. His death was exceedingly sad, sudden and unexpected, it having been caused by accident as told in last week's issue of the Independent. The family are almost overcome with grief. A host of kind neighbors and friends deeply sympathize with them. Edward McGlothlin came here from Okemah, Okla., in April, 1909. Those who knew him best were impressed with his kindly disposition and courteous manner. He was diligent, honest, generous and endeavored to lead an upright life. The funeral services were conducted at the grave by Rev. Gorham. The grief of the family was so intense that the minister was compelled to omit giving usual biographical sketch or to make mention of the many excellent traits and sterling virtues which characterized this good and useful young man. He is not dead -- the child of our affection, But gone unto that school where he no longer needs our protection, And Christ Himself doeth rule. (Riverside Cemetery)

The aged man who has seen his friends drop away from around him one by one, and who feels the oppressive weight of years, many view with indifference the approach of dissolution; but to youth and young manhood vibrant with life and animation, imbued with hope and high aspirations for the future, the call of death is peculiarly sad. It is our sad duty to record the death of a young man who was the idol of his parents and loved by his friends. Donald Merritt, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Merritt, was born in Perry, Kans. and died in Payette June 15th, aged 21 years, 8 months and 3 days. He had been ill for the greater part of two years. His parents had sent him to different places, hoping that climate and other conditions might effect a cure, but disappointment met their efforts. Rev. A. L. Howarth preached a short funeral sermon at the house Sunday afternoon. The M.W.A., of which he was a member, took charge of the ceremony at the grave. He was a devoted son, a loving brother and a faithful friend. His father and mother, two sisters and one brother survive him. (Riverside Cemetery)

He passed away about four o’clock that afternoon after having patiently suffered intense pain from his external and internal injuries. The remains were brought to Payette Saturday and on Wednesday services were conducted at the Sweedish Lutheran church by Rev. Tester of Ogden and interment was made in the Riverside cemetery.
