R. Woodward received an automobile Monday, having ordered it from the east some weeks ago. It is the first machine of the kind that Payette can boast of and consequently attracted no little attention, although it is handsome enough to do so even if they were a common sight upon our streets. The auto is called the General Touring Car and is probably the finest in the state. It contains two elegantly upholstered seats and is 9-horse power with a capacity of speed ranging from three or four to 50 miles an hour. Dr. Woodward was greatly disappointed upon the arrival of his automobile to find that the water pump which cools the engine had been broken in transit and in consequence the machine could only run a few hundred yards. He sent to the factory immediately to have the broken part replaced but he will necessarily have to wait a number of days longer before he can enjoy his valuable new acquisition.

The car was billed to Mr. Johnson but he, realizing the conditions were a little worse at Payette than at Fruitland, turned it over to the City for distribution among those who were out. With the extreme cold weather that immediately followed, the generosity of Mr. Johnson was certainly appreciated.

W. Giesler has started a new industry for Payette. He has purchased six fine goats to take the place of the Jersey cow, which seems to be quite a success. The six goats combined will give considerable more milk than the average cow, and the quality of the milk has no comparison. One gallon of goat's milk will produce as much cream as four gallons of ordinary cow's milk, while the feed for one cow will keep eight goats. These little animals are quite interesting. They are regular pets and are very gentle to handle, but must be lifted to a box or stand while being milked. It is claimed that goats milk has no equal for infant children.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5d.2ADI/1964 Message Board Post: Payette Independent Payette, Idaho Thursday, September 14, 1899 Payette Buys a Lot. We want to congratulate the town council for having taken the first step towards procuring for Payette what every incorporated town should have, namely its own building, in which to transact the public business and keep such apparatus for protection against fire as it may from time to time require. We refer to the purchase of a lot, at the last meeting of the council. This does not mean that the town will erect a public building at once, of course, because the money is not in sight with which to carry out such an undertaking. But we understand the council is committed to the belief that the town must at no distant day own a public building for the purposes heretofore mentioned, and that affairs henceforth will be shaped to that end. The council may rest assured of the fact that in this important move it has the support of all enterprising citizens. The lot selected for city purposes is the block opposite the INDEPENDENT building and is perhaps as good an inside lot as there is in town, the price paid is very reasonable. Of the $500 appropriation as a real estate fund there is $340 left, which amount should be augmented by future appropriations until Payette has a city building and fire apparatus adequate to present demands at least.
