Surnames: Lauer, Driscoll, Coughanour Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5d.2ADI/2276.1 Message Board Post: Payette Independent Payette, Idaho Thursday, December 13, 1900 TOWN CLOCK HAS BEEN STOLEN. The elegant, one-day, one-dollar alarm clock donated to the city hall by Milton Lauer has been stolen. Some conscienceless vandal, filled with liquid exuberance and caring little for the ultimate salvation of his soul has doubtless made way with this munificent gift to the public. It is said that the council will offer a large reward for its recovery and that Marshal Little has been instructed to search every suspicious character seen within the city limits. A more heinous crime has not been perpetrated in this community since Tim Driscoll and W. A. Coughanour got away with 18 Thanksgiving turkeys.

Surnames: Lauer Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5d.2ADI/2276 Message Board Post: Payette Independent Payette, Idaho Thursday, December 6, 1900 A New Town Clock The town hall has a new clock. It is a nice clock. It has wheels in it and the hands go ‘round sometimes. It is not a large clock, but you can see it if you get close enough and are not blind. It used to do business at Milt Lauer’s livery stable until one day it had an affair of honor with a yearling cayuse. The cayuse is still well and happy, but the clock’s face hurts it. Milt said he would donate the clock to the town hall if somebody would hang it up. Some did, last Thanksgiving day, and now there is nothing more to do but for the council to pass a resolution of thanks.

Mr. Ward who was a widower of about 45 years of age, since the death of his wife here at Payette several years ago, has worked among the farmers of this community and was highly respected for this honor and integrity. At the time he was taken sick, he was alone on the Ed Strohbehn ranch east of New Plymouth, Mr. Stohbehn having moved with his family to New Plymouth, and had sent a Mr. Hill to the ranch on Monday after some chickens. When Mr. Hill arrived at the place about dark, he found Mr. Ward in bed asleep and from all appearances the stock about the place had not been fed for several days. When awakened, Mr. Ward asked how long he had been sleeping, said he was not sick and got up and went with the lantern to help catch the c! hickens, but acted very queer, staggered about and would burst into laughter, appearantly hysterical, but said there was nothing the matter. Mr. Hill went to New Plymouth and returned with Dr. Drysdale and after an examination, he was taken to New Plymouth where a doctor from Ontario was consulted and the patient taken to the hospital, where his case developed into every symptoms of Hydrophobia and was diagnosed as such by the attending physician, however it is not know how he became enoculated. His suffering was severe but he seemingly was not conscious at any time of his condition, and death came as the only relief about four o'clock Friday morning. He is survived by a daughter 17 years of age, a mother and sister and two brothers, all now living in Virginia, and one brother Sidney Ward, of Long Creek, Oregon, who was present at the funeral, and two cousins, James and Tom Carico of Payette. The funeral was held from the I.O.O.F. Hall, Monday afternoon and was in charge of the Odd Fellows Lodge, of Payette, of which the deceased was a member, conducted by Rev. Hall, pastor of the M. E. church. Note: Headstone at Riverside Cemetery shows name as Rufus F. ch
