He was 86. He was born January 4, 1916, in Ogden, Utah, to Thomas Doxey Watkins and Mildred May Carter Watkins, the third of eight children. He spent part of his childhood in Holbrook, Idaho, but lived the greater part of his life in the Ogden area. He married Serena Irene Harrop on May 29, 1940, in Ogden, Utah, and they had four sons. Joe served in the Marine Corps during WWII and was among the occupation forces in Japan after the war ended. Joe was an Eagle Scout and an outdoorsman who loved hunting and camping. He also enjoyed bowling and art. But most of all, he loved hard work. He was a maintenance worker, machinist, welder, baker, beekeeper, and farmer, among many occupations. He was creative; the lanterns at the entrance of Weber State University were his handiwork. His idea of relaxation was to dig a new irrigation canal. He once told a grandson that his favorite holiday was Labor Day. He is survived by his wife, Serena; their sons Ronald, Michael (Sheryl), Kenneth (Kathleen), and Richard (Elizabeth); granddaughters Jennifer Noorda (Jared), Heather, and Kristine; grandsons Thomas and Alexander; brothers Ellis (Leda) and Wilford (Emily Ann); and sister Eva. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Norris and David, and sisters Mildred and June. Friends may call at Lindquist"s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Saturday, June 1, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will be held at Lindquist"s Washington Heights Memorial Park on the same day at 11 a.m.
