He died of natural causes after a 25 year battle with multiple sclerosis. Richard was the son of Matthew Fifield and Louise Perry Bird, of Logan. He as was born in Malad, Idaho, on Feb. 1, 1942. Richard grew up on the family farm in Holbrook, Idaho, and spent winters in Logan going to school. He graduated from Logan High, got a bachelor’s degree from Utah State University and a doctorate in physics from BYU. In 1967 Richard married Twila Davis, of Logan, in the Logan LDS Temple. Until his health prevented employment, Richard worked as a senior scientist at the Solar Energy Research Institute (now the National Renewable Energy Research Laboratory) in Denver, Colo. Richard is survived by his wife Twila of Lakewood; his children, Trisha (Mrs. Axel Leimer), Raquelle (Mrs. Marc Johnson), Tiffany (Mrs. Russ Axtell), Travis (and Heidi) Bird and Heather (Mrs. Nathan Jackson); and 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by seven siblings: Perry Bird, Helen Smith, Willa Magruder, Carol Johnson, Maurine Douglas, Ann Hansen and Lou Woodland. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David Bird. A funeral for Richard was held in Lakewood on Tuesday, April 23, and a graveside service will be held in the Logan Cemetery on Thursday, April 25, at 11 a.m. All friends and familymembers are welcome to attend.
