She was born July 21, 1909, to William E. Morse and Sarah Anne Evans Morse. She attended school in Samaria and Malad. She married Ray Hill July 21, 1928, in Pocatello, Idaho. They made their home in Pocatello for a time, then at several locations in St. John. Their home burned to the ground in 1942 and they moved to Arcata, Calif., where Ray was a welder on Liberty ships for the war effort. After the war, they returned to Samaria to farm. Verla went to work in the kitchen at the Oneida County Hospital and soon became kitchen manager. She was renowned for her excellent meals and superlative desserts. Hill belonged to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a primary teacher, primary secretary and a visiting teacher. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant daughter, four grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three brothers and one sister. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Verla Rae and Boyd Mortensen, her grandchildren, Shana Renae Woodbury and W. Ray Mortensen, and seven great-grandchildren, Martin, David, Stephen, Dustin, Scott and Alex Woodbury, and Jennifer Mortensen, and two sisters-in-law, Margaret and Eula Morse. Services will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Horsley Funeral Home in Malad. Family will meet friends Tuesday evening at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home prior to services. Services are under the direction of the Horsley Funeral Home in Malad.
