She was born 16 August 1911 in Bloomington, Idaho, a daughter of James Lehi and Eliza Jacobson Dunford. In her childhood days she enjoyed the sleigh rides, lake swims, school dances, and her classmates in Bear Lake. She developed a keen sense of humor early in life, as evidenced in her diary. She writes that she had just been elected as secretary to the student body at Fielding Academy in Paris and was tickled with the anticipation of a room and a desk of her own to share with her friends. Meanwhile, the school burned down, classes were held all over town, and she reports "It didn't amount to a hill of beans, ...me being the secretary of the school." Lena met her husband yet to be while in the 8th grade. Her diary reflects heart throbs and schemes to spend time with him as a classmate. After waiting 2 1/2 years while he served a mission to Texas, she married James Christian Wallentine in the Logan Temple on 7 June 1933. Immediately after the wedding, the newlyweds drove to Rexburg, Idaho, where they worked in the grocery business starting the day after their marriage. Lena and Jim moved from Rexburg to Malad where they continued in the grocery business. They later moved to Logan and started the Dinner Horn Food Store. Lena worked alongside her husband and enjoyed a team approach to make the business a success. She continued to support the family endeavors in radio stations KBRV in Soda Springs, KVEL in Vernal, and KNAK in Salt Lake City. She supported her husband in car dealerships in Tremonton and Logan along with a cattle ranch in Bear Lake and Soda Springs. In 1953 when the Dinner Horn was sold, she began working at Roskelley's in Logan. Her earnings were dedicated to the welfare of her daughters and grandchildren. Lena was a devoted mother and grandmother. The well-being of her family was the focal point of her life. Her roast beef dinners and mealtime humor were enjoyed by all. She enjoyed handwork and provided each grandchild with a knitted afghan and framed needlepoints. Her meticulous care of the family home, rose gardens, magnolias and lawn were an example to family and friends. As each grandchild learned and respected, nothing was out of place at Grandmother Wallentine's home. She could often be found reading a book with her house in order. Lena had a special love of her immediate neighbors. Lena loved the Lord and endured to the end. Although she served in many LDS Church assignments, her favorite was the Junior Sunday School. Her commitment to the Church was felt in the hearts of eleven grandchildren as they served missions around the world. Her continued devotion and love for her husband was a beacon for her family. Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen Marie Cope (Lloyd) of Orem and Jill Blotter (Tom) of Logan, 13 grandchildren, and 51 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, 7 June 2002, in the Allen-Hall Mortuary on 34 E. Center St., Logan, at 1 p.m. Friends may call Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary and one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
