Thomas, 77, Blackfoot resident, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at the Bingham Memorial Extended Care Facility.He was born July 7, 1924 in Malad, Idaho, to Robert Lewis and Juanita Mirandi Stowe Thomas. He attended schools in Malad, graduating from Malad High School in 1942, where he participated in track and boxing. He went to Idaho State University where he earned a Bachelor's degree in 1952 and received his Master's Degree from the University of Idaho in 1957. He served in the United States Army during World War II in the Eastern Mandates, Southern Philippines, and Ryukyus campaigns. On March 21, 1951, he married Karoline Ann Schiewe in Elko, NV., she preceded him in death on June 19, 1994. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint, holding the office of High Priest. Robert was active in all the communities in which he lived, he served as the Sixth District Commander in the American Legion, President of the Retired Teachers Association, he was a member of the PTA, Superintendent's Association, Silver Chords, the realtorgroup, and helped with taxes for the elderly. He was a teacher in Leadore, Valley High School in Eden, Buhl, Castleford, Jerome and Blackfoot, a principal at Groveland Elementary, superintendent at Pierce and Rockland, and coached football, basketball and track. He retired in 1981. He liked to dance, sing, and golf, and he loved to visit with people and tell stories. He is survived by four sons, Robert Dale "Bob" (Janet) Thomas of Pocatello, Id; James Grant "Jim" (Annette) Thomas of Blackfoot, ID, Jeffery Lyle "Jeff" (Kristi) of Rockland, ID; Bradley Dean "Brad" (Susan) of Sheridan, WY; four brothers, Gordon "Sam", Mont, Darryl, and Bill Thomas, all of Malad, ID; three sisters Lorraine Starkey of Nampa, ID, Norma Thomas of Malad, ID, and Nola Coates of Battle Mountain, NV; 23 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Richard Lynn and Jon Scott Thomas; and two grandchildren Kristie and Kristen Thomas. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 1, 2002, at the Hawker, Hill Funeral Chapel. The family will meet with friends for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. A private family burial service will follow in the Malad Cemetery. The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Lupus Foundation or American Legion Stewart Hoover Post 23 in Blackfoot.
