Jones, 87, of Pocatello, died Wednesday evening January 23, 2002, at a local medical center. He was born February 27, 1914, at Henderson Creek, Idaho, to Joseph A. and Ann Jones. He married Rita Warren, February 7, 1941, in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. She preceded him in death May 18, 1998. Merlin served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a school teacher in American Falls in the early 1940s. He later worked for Idaho Power at the power plant in American Falls, later transferring to Pocatello, working in the sub station on Wyeth Street, then finished his career as a dispatcher, retiring in 1979. During the following 19 years he and Rita enjoyed winters in Mesa, Arizona. He had lived alone in Pocatello since Rita’s passing. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he was a high priest and served in various callings. He enjoyed bowling with his Idaho Power friends. He also enjoyed keeping track of his family and extended family. He maintained a close relationship with his wife’s family, many of whom live in Pocatello, including Jim and Venna Jean Gower, Harmel and Charlotte Warren, and Lita Bowman. He is survived by two sons, Brent (Kathy) Jones of Salt Lake City, children, Katie (Jeff) Nelson (parents of Merlin’s great-grandchildren, Alex and Riley), Jeff (Anna) Jones of Atlanta, Georgia, children, David, Jesse, and Brandi; one daughter, Trudy (Gary) Wood of Boise, children, Ryan and Stephanie; and two brothers, Lewis and Dan. He was preceded in death by his wife, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be conducted today, Saturday, January 26, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Alameda LDS First Ward, corner of Jefferson and Walnut, Pocatello, with Bishop Bart Reed officiating. The family received friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday evening in the Henderson- Cornelison Funeral Home, 431 N. 15th Ave., Pocatello, and will today from 10 a.m. to 10:45 am Saturday in the church. Interment will be in the Malad City Cemetery, Malad, Idaho.
