She was born February 7, 1909, in Malad, the daughter of Emmett H. and Martha Jones Thomas. She was the middle child of 14 brothers and sisters. She grew up and was educated in Malad. She married Floyd R. Hess March 26, 1928, in Pocatello. The first two years of their marriage they lived in Colfax, Washington. Since 1930, they had resided in Elkhorn, St. John and Malad communities. She worked alongside her husband as they earned a living farming and ranching. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was an active member of the Ladies' Aid. She was a great help in taking care of members of her family. She was a hard-working person. Each year she canned hundreds of quarts of fruits and vegetables. Nell is survived by her daughter, W. Kay Dennis (Ron) of Tremonton, Utah; three sons, Robert W. Hess (Lois) and Danny T. Hess (Carrie) of Malad, and Sherman F. Hess (Janice) of LaPine, Oregon. She has 19 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Martisha "Sis" in 1951, and by her husband, Floyd, in 1992. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 24 at noon at the Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W. 300 N., Malad, where friends may call tonight, Wednesday, July 23 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Thursday prior to the services. Burial will be at the Malad City Cemetery.
