KENNETH THORNTON POCATELLO - Kenneth Thornton, 72, of Pocatello, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 29, 2000, at a long-term care center following an extended illness. He was born April 22, 1928, in Malad, Idaho, a son of Ephraim and Cora Ethel Sutton Thornton. He attended elementary school in Downey, and graduated from Downey High School. He helped run the family farm at Birch Creek, on the Bannock side of the Malad Divide, where his father had homesteaded. When Interstate 15 highway was put through the area, their property was sold to the state of Idaho. Ken moved to Pocatello with his mother and sister, Ilene. He went to work for the PFE, retiring in 1993, after 24 years of service. Ken was a member of the LDS Church. He was a high priest. He had served in the YMMIA, and as a home teacher in the Pocatello Third and Foothill Wards. He enjoyed the outdoors and all kinds of wildlife that were so plentiful around the farm, where he grew up. Survivors include two sisters, Myrl Tillotson and Wanda (Eugene) Rademacher, all of Pocatello; 22 nieces and nephews; numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Berniece Harrison and Ilene Thornton, one half-sister, Helen Palmer, two half-brothers, Darrell and Vernon Thornton. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 3, 2000, at 11 a.m. at the Central Stake Center, 225 Oakwood Drive, with Bishop Glen Houghton of the LDS Foothills Ward officiating. Interment will be in the Downey, Idaho Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, Aug. 2, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave., and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the church.

He was born April 20, 1913, to Henry and Emma Thorpe Gleed. He was the fourth child of nine born to his parents. He was raised in the New Canyon area north of Malad City, where he attended the Devil Creek public school, and Malad High School, and worked on the family farm with his parents and siblings. He met and married Estella M. Price of the Deep Creek area on June 15, 1932, in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple. To this union was born three daughters and one son. He and Stella worked and helped run the Price family farm until they later bought the farm from Stella's father, John M. Price. He spent most of his life ranching, raising cattle and breaking horses on the Deep Creek Ranch. He was an avid horseman and loved to hunt. He was a charter member of the Malad Valley Sheriff's Posse for many years, where he served as the drill master for six years, and served his community in many capacities as a member of the hospital board, the Oneida County draft board, Oneida County Farm Bureau, and served in leadership positions on the cattlemen association. He was an active member of the LDS Church, where he served in numerous capacities, and at his death was a member of the First Ward high priest's group. After the death of his wife, Estella, on Jan. 22, 1974, he married Marie J. Gleed in June of 1974. They enjoyed life together for 26 years. During these years they spent time as officiators at the Logan, Utah LDS Temple, working with his son, Neal, on the Deep Creek family farm, and traveling. He is survived by his wife, Marie J. Gleed of Malad; one son, Neal H. (Rolene) Gleed of Malad; two daughters, Delores (Lorin M.) Talbot of Blackfoot, Idaho, and Mary Beth (Loren) John of Malad; five stepchildren, Dr. Wallace Ellis (Teri Raye) Smith of Centerville, Utah, Robert Burnett (Lori) Smith of Loveland, Colorado, Patricia Ann (Dr. Dennis Rulon) Fairbourne of Orangevale, California, Marlene (Charles Robert) Hermes of Denver, Colorado, Marilyn (Dr. Stephen Blaine) Morris of Salt Lake City, Utah; 31 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Anabelle Williams and Carol Hall Babich, both of Malad. He was preceded in death by his wife, Estella, his daughter, Nadine, two grandchildren, his parents, two brothers and four sisters. His funeral will be held Saturday, July 29, 2000, at noon in the First Ward LDS Church building, with Bishop Robert G. Crowther officiating. Friends may call at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home in Malad Friday evening, July 28, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday prior to the funeral services. Interment will be at the Malad City Cemetery following the services.

Thomas MALAD - Helen Roghaar Thomas, 86, wife of the late H. Ward Thomas, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2000, in Provo, Utah, where she had made her home the past year. She was born April 20, 1914, in Grace, Idaho, a daughter of John and Grace Vanderheide Roghaar. She was reared and educated in Grace and was a graduate of Grace High School class of 1932. She later graduated from Albion State Normal in June of 1934 and received a B.A. degree from Utah State University. She married H. Ward Thomas on July 19, 1939, in the Logan LDS Temple. Helen had taught grades 1 to 4 in Thatcher, Idaho, for two years and fourth grade in Malad for 23 years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served on the Primary and Relief Society Stake Boards and as Stake Relief Society president. She was a member of the American Legion War Mothers, serving as president and treasurer of the local chapter and treasurer of the state organization. She is survived by a son, Don (Clara) Thomas of Roy, Utah; daughter, Kathleen (James B.) McDonald of Provo, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Tim, in 1976; her husband, H. Ward, on April 30, 1999; three brothers and three sisters. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 17, 2000, at 12 noon in the Malad LDS Stake Chapel. Friends may call at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W. 300 N., Malad, on Monday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery

Burial will follow at the Malad City Cemetery. He was born March 27, 1912, at Malad, Idaho, a twin and second eldest son of Josiah and Beatrice Jones Price. Earl was raised and educated in Malad. During his youth he enjoyed participating in the school and church plays. He played the guitar and delighted everyone with his songs. He married Izola Morgan December 15, 1934, in Logan, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. He enjoyed sports, and coached his daughters' softball teams. During his younger years, he actively served in many positions in the LDS Church, and was always involved with the young people. He played the guitar, and delighted everyone with his whistling and songs. Earl found great pleasure sharing his collection of stories and tall tales with his friends and family. He loved the outdoors, either hunting or fishing, and spent a great deal of time taking his family for "a ride in the car" anytime, anywhere. He was a mechanic for farm machinery, and worked at the John Deere store as a parts man in Preston and Downey. He retired as custodian for the Downey schools. Earl then did chain saw and small engine repair at his home. Beth Sasser Valentine joined the Price family when Earl married Beth in the Logan LDS Temple April 8, 1988. They enjoyed eight wonderful years of marriage. Survivors include his son, Lewis Dean Price, Pocatello, ID; daughters and sons-in-law, Connie Rae and Larry Bowman, Colleyville, Texas, Kathleen and Mike Austin, Boise, Idaho, son-in-law, Cleon J. Hone and his wife, Lee, of Boise, Idaho; stepsons Kim and Sheri Valentine, Kearns, Utah, Lee and Verla Valentine, Boise, and Mark Valentine, North Dakota; 23 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; brothers, Marion Price and his wife, Roberta, Ronald Price and his wife, Elda Mae, both of Malad; sisters, Shirley Fry and husband, George, also of Malad, Pearl Kelly and husband, Ross, now residing in San Antonio, Texas; a sister-in-law, Viora Morgan, Malad; brother-in-law, Orville Morgan and Marie, of California. Merle Bailey Christensen, 89, passed away on July 3, 2000, at the Oneida County Nursing Home of complications incident to age. She was born in Arbon Valley, Idaho on July 20, 1910, to James Richard Bailey and Anna Leishman Kerr. She was the twelfth child from a family of 13. She attended grade school in Arbon Valley and high school in Pocatello, ID. She married Soren A. Christensen on June 18, 1928 in Pocatello, ID. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on May 29, 1967. Merle is survived by her husband Soren Christensen; by five sons, Darrell, Lynn (Marilee), Daniel (Althea), Larry (Kay) and Alan (Teresa); by a daughter, JoAnn Henderson (Linford); by 29 grandchildren; by 51 great-grandchildren; and by six great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Edan Arbon. Merle was preceded in death by a son, Duane; a great-grandson, Dustin; and a great-great-grandson, Andrew. Merle was an active member in the LDS Church, having callings in the Primary and Relief Society. Merle was a member of the Malad Chapter of War Mothers and the Home Cultural Club. Funeral services were held on Friday, July 7, 2000 at the Malad LDS 2nd Ward Chapel. Burial was in the Malad City Cemetery under the direction of the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home.

Alice spent most of her working years at JC Penney as a sales clerk. After leaving Penney's, she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she assisted in the care of a few elderly ladies. She relocated in Seattle, Wash., in 1974, where she lived with her son, James G. McKay, until his death in 1997. Following James' death, she moved to Kennewick, Wash., to live with her granddaughter, Alice J. Webber, and husband, Greg Webber. She is survived by her grandchildren, Alice J. (Greg) Webber, Beth Cassell, Catherine Zirianoff and Alan J. (Dana) McKay. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. A viewing will be held at Mueller's Chapel of the Falls, 314 W. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Malad; one son, Loyd (Stephanie) Briggs, five daughters, Bernice (Grant) Weeks, Larae (Jesse) Harrison, Beth Briggs, all of Malad, Mary Toone of Green River, Wyoming, Maurine (Tom) Karas of Phoenix, Arizona; 14 grandchildren; one brother, Ray Briggs of Burley, Idaho; one sister, Beatrice (Delmar) Clark of Malad. Howard loved and enjoyed his family, friends and all facets of outdoor activities. WALLACE NEAL FACER LAYTON -- Wallace Neal Facer died on June 27, 2000 at his home in Layton, UT with his wife and daughters by his side. He was born in Malad, Idaho on July 18, 1923 and lived a life that included happiness, family and adventure. He will be remembered by those around him as a loving husband, father, brother and a cherished friend. Neal was born in Southern Idaho to his parents, Lucy Williams and Willard Facer. He had seven siblings: Ila, Elmo, Rula, Jack, Sherman, Carol and Alma. Neal was a veteran of World War II, serving his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in several states throughout the country prior to an extended tour of duty in England and France during the war. He was very proud of his military service and of his country. He was also proud of his brothers and sister who served their country during and after the war. In 1952, Neal married Audrey E. (Betty) Kirkpatrick from Challis, Idaho. She became his companion and dearest friend through 48 years of marriage. Neal was loved dearly by his three daughters and their families: Patricia DeHerrera and her husband Steve, Joy Facer and Russ Mellor, and Jean Facer and Steve Decker. Neal has two grandsons, Nathan DeHerrera and Michael DeHerrera; and four granddaughters, Mindy Facer, Monica Greenway, Madison Facer and Jackie Decker. He also has two great-grandchildren, Gage and Myia DeHerrera. Throughout Neal's life, he loved to go fishing, watch softball games and travel with his best friend, Betty. He took his family on many trips and supported all of them in their lifelong endeavors. He spent many hours watching his grandkids and taking them on fun and happy adventures. He was always busy with his brother, Sherm, fishing or working together on Sherm's farm. He was also very proud of his racecar-driving brother, Alma. He shared many happy birthdays with his little sister, Carol, and he had fun times visiting Rula in South Dakota. Neal was very close friends with Betty's dad, Bill Kirkpatrick. They loved to spend time hunting and fishing together in the mountains of Idaho. Neal showed everyone he was around what a kind and generous person he was. He was dearly loved by his family and friends and he will be in our hearts forever. A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Wed., June 28, 2000 at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Road. Services will be held at 9 a.m. on Thurs., June 29, 2000 at the mortuary and Neal will be buried in the Malad, Idaho cemetery at noon on Thurs.

RUPERT - Theda Rogers, 84-year-old Rupert, ID resident, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at Bannock Memorial Medical Center in Pocatello, ID. Theda was born December 1, 1915, in Malad, Idaho, to Arthur and Mary Jane Thomas Stayner. As a young girl she lived in Castleford and Buhl,ID, where she attended schools, graduating from Buhl High School. Her family then moved to Portland, OR. Later Theda moved to Ogden, UT where she worked for the Ben Lomand Hotel; she also worked several years for Marquart as chief PBX operator until 1975. She married Walter Rogers December 2 1975 in Los Vegas, NV. They lived in Rupert six months of the year and Lava Hot Springs, ID for six months. Theda worked alongside her husband in the sheep business until her health started to deteriorate. Theda is survived by her husband; Walter; three nephews, Bill Hampton, San Jose, CA, John Hampton, Oakley, CA and Michael Stayner of Boise, ID. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Viena Hampton; and one brother, David Stayner. Services were held on Friday, June 30, 2000, at the Paul Pine Chapel in the Paul Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Hansen Mortuary Rupert Chapel.

Helena Peterson Simmons, age 87, passed away June 19, 2000, in Salt Lake City, UT of natural causes. She was born March 8 1913, in Samaria, Idaho, to Mary Agnes Hill and Hyrum Peterson. She attended elementary school in Garland, Utah, Malad, Idaho and Los Angeles, CA, before graduating from West High School in Salt Lake City at age 16. After attending LDS Business College, she went to work for Columbia Pictures Corporation. In 1941, she graduated from Madame Charet's School of Costume Design after which she designed and fashioned clothing in her own shop. Helena, together with her husband and two partners purchased and managed a successful transportation business, Carrier Transfer Company. Of Helen's many gifts, the greatest were her impeccable integrity, commitment to excellence, and a deep love for and devotion to her family. She served valiantly in many church callings throughout her life. Helena married Linvill Symons Simmons on October 11, 1936 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He preceded her in death on July 27, 1968, in Salt Lake City. Also preceded in death by sisters Leola and Mary, brothers Hyrum, Earl and twin brothers, Daniel and John, who died shortly after birth; half sisters Viola, Eulalia, Deloria; half brother, Howard. Survived by daughters Lynene and Kathleen (Richard) Pulsipher, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 24, 2000, at the Monument Park 11th Ward. Interment: Salt Lake City Cemetery, 200 North "N" St. Funeral directors: The Holbrook Mortuary.

I am assuming that Dayon is a typo for Dayton, but the other two areas are confusing. For one thing there is no Box Elder County in Idaho. It is in Utah. I have never heard of Madsenville, but that is not unlikely; it could be an old town that no longer exists. The Honeywell in Box Elder could be Honeyville. You might put your inquiry into the Box Elder County section in the USGenWeb site.

    3. Good evening, everyone! Just wanted you to know that I have added Boundary and Nezperce Counties to my interactive Idaho map. I have also corrected the Ada and Idaho County web sites as their URL has changed. Payette County is still down as the county is in the process of changing servers. To get to the Idaho map just click on the small Idaho map or the words Idaho Connections. The map is a one stop source for Idaho counties and cities. I would really appreciate knowing if you have any new city/county links for me to add to the map project. POCATELLO - Calvin C. Dredge, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Friday, June 9, 2000, at Bannock Memorial Medical Center as a result of cancer. Cal was born January 16, 1926, in Malad, Idaho, a son of Jesse H. and Nellie Kunz Dredge. He was raised and educated in Malad, graduating from Malad High School. It was here he began his love for ranching. On June 6, 1946, he married Miriel Talbot. Together they had two daughters, Susanne and Miriam, both of boise, Idaho. Cal and Miriel were later divorced. He began his ranching career in the Malad area, also serving on many boards of many organizations, including the Idaho Cattlemen's Association and the Idaho Wool Growers Association and several other grazing boards. On April 30, 1977, he married Alicia Aldana in Rupert, ID. Together they have a son, Frank Joseph Dredge,of Rupert. Cal and Alicia continued to ranch in Rupert and Soda Springs, raising both sheep and cattle. Cal always wanted to be a stockman. He loved the livestock industry, the places his work took him and the people he met. Cal never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed by the many who knew and loved him. Cal is survived by his wife, Alice of Rupert; his children, Frank of Rupert; susanne (Val) Jones of Boise; Miriam Dredge of Boise; sisters, Norma (James)Hill of St. George, UT; Elaine (Rosell) Mills of Malad; Ruth (Meryle) Swanson of Mesa, AZ; Rose (Rulon) Ward of Sugar City, ID. He is also survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and four brothers. Rosary was recited on Monday, June 12, 2000 at the Hanson Mortuary in Rupert, ID. Mass of the Christian burial was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church with Father Henry Carmona officiating. Burial followed in the Rupert, Idaho Cemetery.
