Dianne W. Holmes, 63, a 26-year resident of Olympia, died of respiratory failure Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at Providence St. Peter Hospital, Olympia. She was born June 18, 1937, to Lester and Edna (John) Williams in Malad, Idaho. She married Col. Garth H. Holmes on April 5, 1958, in Elko, Nevada. Mrs. Holmes was a teacher for 30 years. She taught for the Department of Defense and the Garrett Heyns Education Center at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton. She was a member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. Mrs. Holmes enjoyed bridge, gardening, crafts, reading and travel. She is survived by her husband, Garth H. Holmes of Olympia, Wash.; two daughters, Zan Johnston of Olympia, and Shannon Stewart of Moscow, Idaho; and one granddaughter. A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 16, at Olympic Funeral Home, Tumwater, Wash. In lieu of gifts and flowers, memorial donations can be made to the ISU Foundation, Campus Box 8050, Idaho State University, Pocatello, Idaho 83209. As the sun set, Dorothy was surrounded by her loving husband and three daughters. Dorothy was born February 27, 1928, in Malad City, Idaho, the daughter of Mary Owen and George Stuart. Dorothy met her sweetheart, Barney Lewis, in high school and upon his return from the war, they married March 9, 1947, at the Lewis Ranch. While Barney attended the University of Idaho they started their family. This adventurous couple raised their daughters, Linda, Suzi and Debby in Idahos wilderness during the summers at guard stations above Stanley. Upon graduating from the university, they began their family life in Fruitland and moved to Boise in 1954. Dorothys working career centered around bookkeeping, accounting and customer services. Barney and Dorothy moved to five acres south of Meridian 25 years ago and created their own retreat with beautiful gardens filled with flowers, trees and birds. As a result of this shared interest, they established Owyhee View Pheasantry, where they successfully raised numerous species of pheasants. They had many opportunities to travel and develop national friendships with other aviary-dedicated people working for the preservation of endangered species. Our spirited wife, mother, grandmother, sister and sister-in-law is survived by husband, Barney J. Lewis; daughters, Linda (Duane) Stands; Suzanne Lewis, and Deborah Lewis; grandchildren, Stacey (Mickey), Brady (Kelly), Jason (RoBen), Nathan, Megan and great-grandson Austin; sister, Margene (Calvin) Criddle and brother, Verlin (Joy) Stuart; a uncle Clair Owens; three aunts, Ella Apgood, Edith Udy, and Beth Scrafford, and her large and loving extended family. Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Owens Stuart, and father, George Stuart. He was born August 22, 1942 in Stone. He grew up and was educated in Stone and Malad. Wayne spend his life ranching, farming, and mostly trading cattle. He loved the outdoors and his horses. Wayne is survived by his four children; Diane (Ron Dell) Skidmore of Stone; Dennis (Jackie) Carter of Stone; Doug (Cheryl) Carter of Fort Hall; Deniece (Matt) Tubbs of Malad. 11 grandchildren; one brother, Gary Carter of Elwood, Utah and one sister, Terry of Buhl. She was in her home with loved ones at her side at the time of her death. She was born December 1, 1901 in Malad, a daughter of John Ashel Jones and Mary Adams. She had four brothers and three sisters. She married her only true love John Jones Williams in Malad, the 21st of December, 1921. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on July 25th, 1935. Leona lived in Malad her entire life. She was an active member the LDS church and served in many capacities. She received her education in Malad. Her greatest joy was her family. Her hobbies were gardening, canning, cooking, baking, sewing, quilting, and serving others. She was the mother of eight children, two sons and six daughters. She is survived by five devoted children: John Jones (Verlene) Williams, Mary Delene (Robert W.) Edwards, Ila Mae (Wynn) John, Bonnie (Hugh) Johnson, Rosa Lee (Tyndale) Evans. 40 grandchildren, 131 great grandchildren, and 29 great great grandchildren, and one brother Vernon (Carol) Jones, two foster granddaughters, and three foster great grandsons. She was a woman who made friends, and was loved by all those who knew her. Her life was one of compassion and kindness to everyone. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son and daughter-in-law, Sharrel Don (Edna) Williams, two daughters, and their spouses, Leona Marie (Pete) Goodey, Kay Dean (Gerald) Williams, one son-in-law William Floyd Hill, one grandson Leon John, two granddaughters Ila Marie Goodey, and Kristine Goodey Clark and three infant grandsons. Sarah loved her brothers and sister dearly. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Sarah will be missed by all who loved her. Surviving are two nieces and one nephew, Joy L. She was born August 29, 1913, in St. John, Idaho, the daughter of Archibald and Mary Mae Jones Harris. She married Theras Evans Lewis on December 3, 1934. Theras died October 16, 1973. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah temple July 20, 1965. Katie attended school in St. John and Malad. She graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1931. She was active in the LDS Church, and served in several positions. She was known for her wit and sense of humor. She loved to write poetry, and had a few of her poems published in the Childrens Friend. She worked for a short time for Thiokol Corporation, and for the Malad Soil Conservation office as a secretary and bookkeeper. She lived most of her life in St. John, Idaho. The last 18 years she had resided at Heritage Place in Bountiful, Utah. We thank those that took such good care of her while she lived at Heritage Place. She will be missed by her children and grandchildren. She is survived by a son, Gordon (Kathleen) Lewis of Boulder, Colorado; a daughter, La Ree Sperry of Malad; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Orpha Harris Hal of Mountain Home, Idaho, Maisie Harris Williams of Malad, Idaho, and Bonnie Harris Giles of Bountiful, Utah; and brother-in-law, Keith Evans of Malad. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theras, parents, sisters, Millie Courtney and Rula Evans, and son-in-law, Craig Sperry. She was born April 9, 1912, in Malad, Idaho. A daughter of Evan W. and Mary Evans Jones, she was raised and educated there. She was married to Elton V. Welker in Ogden, Utah, on July 11, 1932. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. He died in 1976. She is survived by their children, three sons and one daughter, Gerald Dean Welker, San Jose, Calif., Alice Ruth (Richard) Olson, Millville, Elton Wayne (Georgia) Welker, Port Angeles, Wash., and Dennis Jay (Kathy) Welker of Bountiful, Utah; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Helppie, Walnut Creek, Calif., Wilda Thompson, Fremont, Calif., and Thelma (Dick) Rockwell, LaFayette, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and four sisters. Vera's vocation was being a wife and mother. She worked part-time for J.C. Penney Company for many years. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she held the honored position of nursery leader for the Relief Society and loved the children that she served. She was a member of the Relief Society Singing Mothers for many years, as well as primary teacher and visiting teacher. In her later years she was the Singles Leader in her ward. The singles group held family night meeting in her home over the years until illness prevented her from doing so. A lover of flowers, she supplied the church each Sunday with a beautiful bouquet from her own garden. She dried and arranged flowers for special occasions for family and friends for many years. Crocheting afghans for family and friends occupied a lot of her time when she was homebound. The self-appointed family historian, she compiled a record book of family happenings for each of her brothers and sisters that she kept current until her health prevented it. Being a member of the Harmonica Band that entertained all over the valley was a source of joy to her and she had the pleasure of attending their concert last week and even played along with them for several numbers. She will be remembered as the lady with a joke for everyone. The mechanical pets she took with her cheered the homebound and her friends in nursing homes. Her cookie jar was the stopping place for everyone who visited her home. Funeral services will be held at noon Monday at the Logan 7th Ward Chapel, 565 E. 100 South. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 E. 400 North, Logan and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Church. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery.

He is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Ferris) Hess, Malad, Idaho, and a son, Lamonte (Janice) Thomas, St. John, Idaho; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Erma (Cliff) Yearsley of Malad. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. He was born the eighth of ten children to George LeRoy and Elvera Otensen (Lake) Stone, March 23, 1936, in Malad, Idaho. Arnold graduated from Pocatello High School in 1955. He furthered his education, receiving his bachelors degree in sociology in 1971. From there he went on to the FBI Academy, graduating in 1978. Arnold married Charlotte Clark, and they had two children, Valerie and Steve. They were later divorced. He married Carol Jane Eldredge in Pocatello June 3, 1969, and they were blessed with two children, Randy and Shawna. Arnold retired after serving 21 years for the City of Chubbuck as chief of police. He also worked at Idaho State University in public safety. He was a member of the Bannock County Mounted Sheriffs Posse. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, attending the 37th Ward. He loved horses, cattle, camping, fishing and hunting. Arnold was a great storyteller and enjoyed making people laugh. He was very much a family man, giving and generous. He is survived by his wife, Carol Jane Stone, Pocatello; children, Valerie Ann Pierce, Kenai, Alaska; Steven ( Paula) Stone, Pocatello; Randy Charles (Kate) Stone, Smithfield, Utah; Shawna (Dale) Cureaga, Ketchum, idaho; brothers, Dennis Charles (Lois) Stone, Pocatello; Orgil (Thelma) Stone and Oren (Carla) Stone, Ogden, Utah; sisters, Anna Benson, Sandy, Utah; Eudora Anderson, Weston, Idaho;and Audrey Veibell, Ogden, Utah; and six grandchildren. Blaine Sasser, 85, of Pingree, died Tuesday, January 16, 2001, at his home from natural causes. He was born August 12, 1915, in Holbrook, Idaho, the son of Luther Blain and Helena Michaelis Sasser. He attended Malad High School, where he was active in sports. On December 25, 1936, he married Ardeena Nalder in Holbrook, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized on February 16, 1968, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. He worked at various jobs in Garland and Tremonton, Utah. In 1939, they purchased a farm in Pingree, where he lived the rest of his life. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as Young Mens president, elders quorum president and high priest group leader. He enjoyed working with youth groups in both church and 4-H. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ardeena, of Pingree; children, Lyle (Sonja) Sasser of Richland, Wash., Ileen (Del) Bunce of Eagle, Idaho, OraLee (Paul) Woods of Pingree, Idaho, and Eldon Sasser of Duval, Wash.; three sisters, Nellie Gleed of Provo, Utah, Ethel (Eph) Hawkins of Murray, Utah, and Fern Williams of Beaver, Utah; 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and three sisters. She was born December 17, 1925, the daughter of George Merlin and Viola Thomas Ward. She grew up and was educated in Malad. As a young girl she helped the family herd sheep at Mink Creek during the summer. She married Rene Deschamps on November 23, 1943 in the Logan Temple. They lived in St. John on the family homestead, raising alfalfa, sugar beets, peas and managing a dairy herd. She worked as a cook at local restaurants for many years. Everyone enjoyed her cooking because she was a great cook. She was a beautiful seamstress, sewing for her family, from shirts to party dresses. She was a master canner, canning meat, fruits, vegetables, jams, jelly and pickles, and teaching her skills to her children. She enjoyed reading, working in her flower garden and especially loved quilting. She gave quilts to all of her children and grandchildren. She entered many in the County Fair and received many ribbons. Melba was a member of the LDS Church where she served as Relief Society secretary and for many years as Primary teacher. Melba is survived by her loving husband Rene, five sons, Merlin (Pat) of Ogden, Utah; Tom (Janet) and Mark (Leeann) of Malad; Quin (Denise and Mike (Nikki) of Pocatello, Idaho. Four daughters, Sue Ann (Dick) Robbins; Brenda (Don) Daniels of Malad; Rosalie (Ned) Silvester and Debbie (Jerry) Reisner of Riverside, Utah. 34 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, three sisters, Neva (Cleland) Jones, Judy (George) Jones of Malad and Lois Davis of Riverdale, Utah. Her parents, sister Betty Van Horn, three grandchildren and a son, Dennis James preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held Monday, January 8, 2001 at the Malad Stake Center, 400 North 200 West, Malad at noon, with Bishop Vern Bastian officiating. He was raised and educated in Center Creek and Heber, Utah. He married Merle Bailey on June 18, 1928, in Pocatello, Idaho. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on May 29, 1967. For many years he worked for the Kraft Cheese Company in Pocatello, and later moved to Arbon Valley. In 1942, he moved to Malad, where he remained until his death. Farming and fishing were his lifes greatest enjoyments. He is survived by five sons, Darrell, of Malad, Lynn (Marilee) of Idaho Falls, Daniel (Althea) of Downey, Larry (Kay) of Idaho Falls, Alan (Teresa) of Federal Way, Washington; one daughter, JoAnn Henderson (Linford) of Salt Lake City, Utah; 29 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Mina Giles, and a stepsister, Mary Provost. He was preceded in death by his wife, Merle, who passed away on July 3, 2000, a son, Duane, a great-grandson, Dustin, and a great-great-grandson, Andrew. Funeral services will be held January 6, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the Malad LDS Second Ward Chapel, 20 S. 100 W. Friends may call at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W. 300 N., Friday evening, Jan. 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., and on Saturday at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff, nurses and doctors at the Oneida County Nursing Home for their love and tender care of our father. Douglas was born August 19, 1918 in Montpelier, Idaho, the son of Lawrence A. and Vernell Bridges Malone. After working throughout his youth on the family ranch, he married Ruth Donna Johnson on August 4, 1937. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple on April 30, 1964. They were blessed with six children. After the passing of his dear, eternal companion in 1982, Douglas met and married Caryol Browning Davis on July 28, 1984. She blessed his life for 16 wonderful years. Douglas worked many jobs, the most notable being five years in Alaska where he welded and mined gold on the side. Anyone that has heard his stories of bears and the back country, knows that he lived his life with a thirst for adventure and fun. He retired in 1984 from Associated Piping and Engineering, after 16 years of being a welder and foreman. He was also a proud member of Local 348 of the Plumbers and Steamfitters. He always enjoyed trap shooting, horses, motorcycles, and being in the mountains. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy. Douglas was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints where he served in many callings including a Stake Mission, Bishopric 2nd Counselor, and High Priest Group Leadership. In 1986, he and Caryol served a faithful genealogy mission in Salt Lake City. They also enjoyed regular visits to the temple. In 1994, Douglas and Caryol moved to Malad, Idaho where they made many friends. He will always be remembered for the testimony he carried and his personal relationship he had with his Savior. Dad, we will always have fond memories of how you loved to tease, and of your wonderful sense of humor, the countless hunting trips, and the way you loved and accepted everyone know matter what their station in life was. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his wife, Caryol, five sons and one daughter, Lonnie J. Malone, Ogden; Michael D. (Rhea) Malone, West Haven; Craig A. (Karen) Malone, Roy; Vicki (Ben) Weatherford, Hampton, Virginia; Kurt D. (Cindy) Malone, Southlake, Texas; Matt D. (Kathy) Malone, Hooper; 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-children, Barbara (Ron) Hall, Green River, Wyo.; Annette (Von) Elcock, Jerome, Idaho; Helen Jean Davis, West Jordan; Jay Claire (Cindy) Davis, Columbus, Ohio; 13 step-grandchildren and 13 step-great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth, one sister, Eldeen Holmes, and one great grandson, Drew. Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Roy Monte Vista Ward Chapel, 3845 South 2000 West. Betty Van Horn was born on Jan. 20, 1927. to George Merlin and Viola Ward in Malad City, Idaho. She was the second oldest of five daughters. Betty attended school in Malad. During the summer she helped with the family sheep herd up on Mink Creek, where she learned to enjoy the outdoors. Betty married Boyd Van Horn on July 20, 1946, at American Falls, Idaho. When they were first married, they lived on the Van Horn family farm in Arbon Valley during the summer and American Falls in the winter. While they were living in Arbon, she had three children, Diana, Barbara and Gary. Later Boyd was working construction; Betty was moved to Promontory, Utah, where they lived for three years. After that, they moved to Malad for one year before moving back to American Falls, Idaho. In 1961 Betty began working for Lamb-Weston, a potato processing plant. She worked for Lamb-Weston for 30 years, until her retirement at the age of 62. Betty enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with her husband and children. In 1978 she lost her husband of 32 years. Later she kept company with Harvey Anderson from Arbon, where she still enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. While with Harvey, Betty also took up 4-wheeler riding and snowmobile riding. After Harvey passed away, Betty moved back to Malad and later up to Jackson, Wyoming, where she enjoyed retirement and enjoyed activities at the senior center. While up in Jackson, she also made many new friends. Betty is preceded in death by her husband Boyd and both her parents. She is survived by her three children, Diana Hernandez (David), Barbara Valdez (John) and Gary Van Horn (Sabrina); four sisters. Melba Deschamp (Rene), Neva Jones (Cleland), Judy Jones (George), all of Malad, Idaho; and Lois Davis of Riverdale, Utah; numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are being made by Valley Mortuary, Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Our loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was called home to be with her husband, Henry, who passed away Saturday, December 9, 2000. We know that Dad and Mom went together to prepare a place for us as loving as the one they made here on earth. She was born September 11, 1929, in Malad, Idaho, a daughter of Lavour and Berniece Leigh Williams. She was raised and educated in Malad. Henry and Durene were married on May 26, 1946, and they solemnized their marriage in the Logan LDS Temple on June 19, 1965. Mom was always there for her husband and children. She received great joy in taking care and doing service for others. She is survived by four sons, Gary (Geraldine) Roderick; Bary (Kathy) Roderick; Bruce (Sonja) Roderick, all of Portage, Utah; Dale (Betty) Roderick, Malad; four daughters, Trudy (Jim) Rock, Nibley, Utah; Doylene (Alan) Bourne, East Garland, Utah; Gayla (Travis) Clark, Portage; Tamra (Paul) Williams, Rangely, Colorado; 22 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; one brother, Doyle (Ardith) Williams, California; and a brother-in-law, Nate Wharton, Malad. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Daniel "Buster" Williams; a sister, Judy Wharton; and one granddaughter, Wendi Jo Roderick. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 18, 2000, at 12 noon in the Portage LDS Ward chapel, Bishop Robert Weyland officiating.
