She earned a two-year teaching certificate at Southern Branch, now Idaho State University, then started teaching at Cherry Creek. She completed her teaching requirements at ISU, graduating in 1963. Education was of great importance to her, and was exemplified by her philosophy. She always tried to teach each child as an individual, and took as much time as possible to get close to each one of them. She retired from 37 years of dedicated teaching from the Oneida school district. Faye married Frank Carson Thomas on June 13, 1935, and together they raised and educated four sons. Frank preceded her in death in 1996, after 61 years of marriage. Faye was active in many organizations. But her greatest passion was fishing. And she was a gifted fisherwoman. During her last years Alzheimer's slowly robbed her of her short-term memory and made daily functioning very difficult. But it did not take away her intelligence, quick wit and sharp sense of humor. We will always remember her for her hearty laugh. And she's also here with some Stephens family who were introduced to us by the Bed & Breakfast hostess. They drove us all over the area. The vicar and his wife drove us out to see more of the countryside. We were also his guests at two Pencader old folks dinners at the church. At each dinner, over 100 people gave us a standing ovation as guests of the town. Sharing these photos and part of the experience of the two trips would be the very least I could give back to my families with whom I am not even acquainted in the Malad Valley. It is to these families and our ancestors that I owe my heritage in the Church, for the enormous sacrifices that our ancestors made for us. My father's dad lost his farm in St. John in the Great Depression. They were never the same in Ogden. St. John was their life. It was the greatest tragedy, a dark day when they were forced to leave. My dad never had anything but the very best of memories of growing up there. Last year, I had the most wonderful experience. My dad's cousin, Mitchell Deschamps (now age 100) made me a series of audio cassette tapes. They include many voices from St. John, perhaps including some of yours, his, and he even went out to the farm to tape the cows mooing so I could understand his life better. The tapes are histories and memories of St. John. You can be sure that Mitchell Deschamps is one of St. John's greatest heroes! I am in the process of slowly transcribing these tapes. When completed, I'll post the typed version on this site. Family history has been one of my hobbies since age 15 (now 56). Feedback welcome. Steve Illum Springfield, Missouri stevef_i@yahoo.com

In 1989, there was no place to stay in Pencader. On returning in 1996, we had made a reservation to stay here on the Internet. It's absolutely immaculate, new bathroom in the guestroom, lovely host family, beautiful flower gardens, delicious home-cooked meals, more than you can possibly eat, large guestroom windows that open out for a beautiful view of the Valley, a ride from and back to the train in Carmarthen included, free laundry service (folding included!), and an introduction to the local parish vicar and congregation! We were thus treated like royalty by the townspeople. There was no doubt that this little village is the ancestral "sister city" to St. John. I'm sure they all knew that I was related to just about everyone in the village, just as I would be in St. John. And, the B&B was not only one of the best in which I've ever stayed in Europe or the U.K., but it was one of th! e least-expensive. Feedback would be great!
